Yes
I've got a bit of an issue with my D50.

I tried to use it this morning, the shutter opens but will not close and then an 'err' message shows up flashing at the bottom of the display.

Has anyone had this problem before on their Nikon? Is it a major problem?

sounds like the shutter is sticking, a pretty major problem, I had something similar on a Canon 350D I was told around £120-140 to fix it

Thanks mate. Looks like it could be time to upgrade to a new body.

I'll have to have a dabble with it and see if i can free it up.

Just in case it is something really daft. It's not set in bulb mode or something like that!

Or mirror lockup (if it has it)?

I'd agree, will be more cost effective to upgrade body. Technology has moved on sooo much since the D50 that you'll be impressed how they've changed, and won't be much more than the repair bill :)

Tried the obvious and it still does it.

Any suggestions on a new body? Say £400ish?

I've got AF fitment lenses so wouldnt really want to stray away from those.

Yes, you can definately pick up a D200 for that. I saw several when I was looking at upgrading my wifes camera from her D40x

My mate Rick (vecsri on here) has one and i like it. That could be the way forward.

I'll have to try and see if i can find a good one somewhere, otherwise i think i'll be upgrading to a D300 if funds allow.

What happens when you turn the camera off? Does the shutter close then?

If you take the lens off and fire the shutter, can you see the sensor, or is it just the mirror moving up?

Re-seat the lens by removing and replacing it, seen loads of 'ERR' errors reported and many times its the lens to camera contacts shorting and causing a problem.

Also check you battery is not shorting, blow out the battery chamber, clean the battery pins.

Worth a try, as it is free

I had the exact same problem a week after I bought my D50, mirror sticking and ERR message.

Contacted Nikon and they said it was finished - basically. Took it back to the lovely people at LCE and they immediately gave me a brand new one.

if you buy a new camera stick the body on ebay, I put the 350D on ebay as faulty just the body and a body cap nothing else, 99p no reserve, I explained the fault expecting to get £20 for it, it made £102:bonk:

I sold everything else separately including the kit lens and ended up with £140, it was a mates camera, when I gave him the money he was gobsmacked, free beer that night :D

How about he upgrades to a D300 and you buy his D200??

Just a thought.;)

I might have one plus a grip for sale soon too if I can find a D2x at the right price/condition :) D3 is out of my price range at present

I joined the darkside in the end and got a 450d :)

When was that btw? The reason I ask is that I'm currently about to sell one of my D200s and I've been trying to find out the market rate for them at the moment. I know that good (boxed, with all accessories) low click ones on eBay have been selling over the last few days IRO £450 - £500 depending on the condition (there have been a few lower IRO £425 but they are either well used or there is something 'iffy' about the auction. I've not seen one on here for sale for a good few weeks and I've not seen any in the dealers for a while either.

I have noticed that the values of S/H kit is rising at the moment almost in line with the new kit prices and I'm wondering if your £400 prices were a few months back.

yes quite possibly! There were a few changed hands at those prices.
