Hi All

Anyone use this combo for shooting kids football ?

currently using above camera with the Nikon 18-70 ED lens but was looking for some extra zoom

Think i might still struggle when the light drops though

Thats a woeful lens and i wouldnt have one for free, seriously, its utter garbage, save your money and save up for an early Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8

I have tried using the 70-300 all be it an old model on my D70 and the focus just could not keep up with the action to get many keepers, those that were in focus were fine but my mate with his D7000 + 70-200 sigma got so many more keepers it was not funny, he is far more accomplished than me but even he struggled with my set up :)

Gary I think I remember you saying the early sigma 70-200 f2.8 was better than the newer ones is that correct? Hopefully it will be my next lens.

Cheers
Ian

Hi Ian, in many peoples experience including mine the earlier NON Macro versions were far superior but are difficult to get hold of, now im not saying the newer models are poor but it seems that with the introduction of the Macro models that quality control went out of the window, issues with front/back focussing, general sharpness issues, varying amounts of CA and fall off were and still are issued being reported, the new OS version seems to have got things back on track though

Early models even as far back as the original APO HSM models were all excellent.

Jeez dont hold back lol :) will need to do for now though would like to upgrade the camera first with a D90

cheers for the info though

well there goes my chance of trying the lens out game called off already pitch waterlogged !

Had my first game using it today and considering the really strong wind and occasional rain i think it wasnt too bad

Bit soft on the long end but i think the camera struggles more as i have to up the iso to about 800 and on the D50 it can be noisy when trying to get a decent shutter speed

Bit more practice me thinks
