Hi, i have just bought a Nikon D50 (pick it up on Friday).

It comes with the standard Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED LENS

What do people recommend as a good zoom lens for it. I have seen some 55 - 200 lenses but what is a better buy.

Thanks

If on a tight budget look for the 70-300 Nikon zoom on here....Sure it was around £68 !!! I borrowed the neighbours & although feeling cheap it produced great results for money !! You can always sell for same or more on EBAY if you decide to upgrade

I would look to spend around £300 on a really good lens as it would be an investment.
It is for sports and wildlife pictures. Some of the sports are the kids football.

if you can reach £400 you can get a sigma 70-200 f2.8 second hand which is a fantastic lens, other that that the sigma 70-300 apo dg as mentioned before is about £170 and great for the money.

Yeah, I bought one from 7dayshop. It's great for the money but if I was doing anything serious (I.e. not just as a hobby) I'd upgrade.
I spend more time taking shots at shorter focal lengths though :)

What about this lens - AF 28-300mm XR Di LD Aspherical Macro IF f3.5-6.3 (62mm)

It's £209 from warehouse express, has anyone got one or does anyone know where i can get reviews and compare lenses.

Try the FM reviews section as a starter...

Sigma 2.8 is £460 from onestop. One word of warning though , go to something like Jessops to try 1st , as I was going to buy the 2.8 Sigma until I tried it on my camera....how heavy !!! For me it was too much to carry around on camera, although perfect for those who don't mind. Note nearly all the faster zoom lenses weigh more.

Thanks for the Tip, not sure on what to get yet, will have a play around with the camera and standard lens and then go from there.

Roll on tomorrow when i pick it up

What about the Sigma 28-300mm f3.5-6.3 DG MACRO Lens for £179.99 inc vat from camerabox.co.uk

I haven't got a D50 yet but was considering this lens for when i buy one, what do you think?

I was looking at the 70-300mm f4-5.6 APO DG Macro lens, same sort of price.

In the end though i bought a 70-300mm Nikon lens off ebay, it was only £50 (second hand), so will give this a try and then go from there.

What does the APO mean? Is it better?

Hi PPP, like yourself I'm also very new to all this sort of thing, but I can highly recommend the Sigma 70-300 Apo Macro, please see below the first pics I took with it this week.

Hope this helps to make your mind up, if you are looking to buy have a good shop around I paid £185 which is quite high as I part ex'd too, but I've seen it around the £150 mark.

Glen. :)

it's £122 from onestop here

but of course with the possible quality control issues sigma have on these lenses id say go for a local shop so you can try it out. better to spend more and get a good one, than you get a cheap one and hate it.

ps APO also reduces coloured fringing. and its a sharper lens.

The only thing with onestop its based in Hong-Kong. :suspect1:

Yep, but the price you see is what you pay incl P&P. I & others have used them before & can only praise them for service :thumb: Saying that I chose to buy my Sigma 10-20mm from Jessops due to concern I may have to replace & the £30 saving from HK wasn't worth the risk of paying P&P

My nikon 70-300 lens arrived this morning and my Lowepro Mini Trekker AW Bag.

Although when i saw the size of the bag it is anything, but mini, holds a lot of gear though, 2 SLR cameras, 8 lenses plus other storage pockets. Very nice bag.

Taking the camera out the weekend so will post some pics with the new lens probably on Sunday.
