Hi just wondering what people thought of these cameras compared to each other? I seem to be able to get either for £400 any suggestions?

D50? I've seen them new for £300 - that's £100 left to spend on other bits. Although the D40X is 10MP, I don't really see the need myself.

Personally I'm a 'Nikon man', but I know lots of people with 400D's and they're very happy with them. Sorry my post hasn't been more helpful!

I spent a couple of weeks thinking about the same thing myself. In the end decided for the 400d which should be arriving next week. The thing that persuaded me in the end was the choice of lenses. I believe the d40 and d40x only takes lenses that have built in motors for the autofocus (AF-S) which are quite pricey.

£179 for a 18-70 AFS DX. Not really bank breaking.

Go and handle them for yourself. Get the one that feels best.

As a Nikon man myself, I'd go with the d40x. Nice bit of kit with good reviews.

The lenses do indeed need to be motorised though. MEssiah Kahn posted a list for me of compatible lenses in another post

Like someone else said earlier - the D50 (what I use too) is a great cam and should fit into your budget!!!

Let us know what you opt for.

What I should of said was they are more expensive in general. I agree with going and actually using both cameras though. See what feels best, take a look at the menu systems etc.

Also look for some vids on youtube. Found some decent vids on both cameras showing the features and menus etc.

Ask yourself the question "would I be happy with second best?"...If the answer is no buy the Canon:canon:

:exit: runs away to hide:lol:

Thanks everyone, sound advice there. Could you tell me if either the Canon or Nikon have anti shake? I can't seem to find it in the spec.

Thanks

Both the Canon and Nikon have a form of anti-shake but it comes with the (specific) lens, not the body. Similar to Canon IS I'm sure the Nikon VR lenses are also quite expensive relative to other "regular" lenses.

HTH!

DOH!!:bonk:

WELCOME TO TPF!!:welcome: :welcome: :welcome:

The Nikon 70-300mm VR lens is anti-shake. It is compatible with the D40x and retails for around £280. It's a lovely lens!!

They are both very capable cameras, and im sure you'll be happy with either. However.. ive got a D40x, and the lens situation doesn't bother me much at all, The compatible lens list is already huge, and is ever increasing. The are only a couple of lenses that arn't compatible in terms for AF(50mm 1.8) that I would like, but these can be used in MF. The issues that affect me more though are;

No Auto exposure bracketing. No MF/AF switch on the camera body. No depth of field preview button on the camera body. Im not sure if the 400D has any of these, but it might be worth taking into account when making you decision.

The reason I chose the D40x(The choice was actually between a D40/350D, but I ended up with a D40x for the price of the D40) was due to how it felt in my hand. The physical shape, as well as the controls just felt a lot more natural to me. Some people however get on perfectly well wit the 400D. So before you buy, try them both.

And here's the lens list mentioned;

There should be even more lenses on that list I think, as it doesn't seem to include any AF-I lenses. But they are very expensive.

Unless budget is a real problem get yourself a 30D!

Three times the camera a 400D will ever be!
