Yes
Looking at getting a DSLR soon, and I'm a tad confused about the Nikon D40 (I do get confused easily though)

As I understand it, one of the cons of the D40 is it's inability to AF with certain lenses.

As I will be using the camera for motorsport, I have been looking at some of the kits that come with 2 lenses, the standard kit lens of 18-55 and a 70-200.

How do I know if the lens will AF or not?

Thanks in advance.

Perhaps the biggest negative on the D40 is that it doesn't have an internal focus drive motor and hence no mechanical focus drive pin, instead it only has CPU contacts which means it can only Auto Focus with AF-S and AF-I lenses (those with built-in focus motors).

From the D40 review at http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond40/

if your going to get a D40, see if you can find a superior D50 still around somewhere...

to be honest i really don't see the point of the D40, when it was first announced it was supposed to be an affordable entry into DSLR, i even read about price's between £260-£300 which would have been ok, but now it's on the market it seem's to be around £400, the D50 is a better camera, and can still be had for about £370 with the kit len's,and take's the lens's the D40 does'ent,i would definately go for the D50, and did

Agreed! The D40 needs AF-S lenses for autofocus to work, which kinda rules out the nifty fifty (best budget Nikkor lens about). Go for a D50.
