Nikon D40 Focus Ring

Hiya

I wonder if anyone can help me, I have just learnt about the focussing ring on my Nikon D40, but when I tried to use it it made scary sqeaking/clicking sounds. Do you think it is because it hasn't been used before and is just stiff or is it broken?

Any help would be appreciated.

Is the switch set to manual or autofocus on the lens? Assuming you're talking about the kit lens, the focus ring is stiff unless you set it to manual.
