I've been doing quite a lot of low light shooting recently and have realised that the AF assist illuminator has a purpose beyond being a shining indicator of the shutter about to fire.
That said I was wondering why it doesn't appear to activate before every shot on my Nikon D3100? Sometimes I see the light before most shots and use it to assist with the focus, at other times it hasn't switched on and I've had to be creative using the focus ring and focus lock button to get the focus I wan't after the camera's initial 'guess'. Not a huge problem but one thats meant portraits have occasionally taken slightly longer to capture than I've wanted.
Does anyone know how I can get the indicator to illuminate every time (in the dark)?
