Yes
as title really I have gone from a d3000 to a d5100 ( hoping for a d5500 in new year). Sorry if in the wrong forum

my question is.... Should I sell the d3000 with kit lens (like new) boxed etc. And as I wont be making a fortune of it , is it better for me just to keep as a back up?
also what would be a fair price to ask if I did sell it?
many thanks

I'm not sure on value but I guess maybe £100 or a tiny bit more since it has the lens. Just take a look on ebay sold prices to get a feel. Whether it's worth keeping as a backup is too personal to answer and it comes down to how much the money from the sale is worth to you and how important having a backup camera is. I suspect most people don't really need a second SLR but it can be handy sometimes.

Depending on the trade in value, it may be worth hanging on to it until someone's doing a good trade in bonus against bodies. In the past couple of years, I've done pretty well trading in an F65 (£125 IIRC) and a D70 (again, £125) against new bodies, with the actual value of them being closer to £25.

TBH, I'm not that sure going for a newer model in the same series is a worthwhile "up"grade and it might be better to save a bit longer and go for a D7?00 or D300. Newer models in the same range are usually pretty much the same as the old one but with a few extra bells and whistles that the marketing department sell to the unwary. IF the new bells and whistles offer extra features that you want/need at a cost that you're happy to pay though, why not?! (Might be worth looking at updates to firmware which might add a few of the bells and whistles to the older model...)

If you can see one of those trade in bonus and cash back deal, then it is worth doing because you get double discount before they value your gear.
