Hi There, I've just got a couple of questions. I am looking to buy a 18mm-200mm lens and I have have found these two.

I'm not sure if they are compatible with the NIKON D3000 also I am not sure why there is a price differnece as they appear the same lens to me. I'm quite new to photography and Ive decided to replace my kit lens for one that covers the whole range.

Also I am just double checking that this lens is also compatible with Nikon.and again im not sure why there is a price difference. I realise the F.stop is different but surely the F. stop which is smaller should be the more expensive lens?

Be great to have any feedback or tips etc. I think I maybe be missing some important information here about some vital features. Many Thanks.

The cheaper sigma lens doesn't have an autofocus motor, so wouldn't autofocus with your D3000

Hi BlueMoon, welcome to the forums

The difference in price with your first two links is explained by the OS in the designation of the more expensive lens. This means that the pricier lens has Optical Stabilisation. Neither of these lenses has the HSM suffix which means that they do not have a motor to drive the autofocus function. In practice this means that you can use them and they will physically fit your Nikon D3000, but you will have to focus manually. - see link

With the second two links you have posted, the difference is with the apertures. The more expensive lens has a faster f3.5 aperture throughout the zoom range of 10-20mm, whereas the cheaper lens is slower, with a variable aperture. Both of these lenses have the HSM suffix so will autofocus with your camera.

Hope this helps.

Yes this helps alot. Thanks

Choosing a lens is really quite difficult isnt it. Hmm...in a nice way though :)

Yes that lens does have autofocus and vibration reduction. And in Sigma terminology OS = Nikon VR and HSM = Nikon AF-S.

arh righty, I'm just used to Nikon thats why. But nikon lens are too expensive with my current buget but Ive heard alot of good things about sigma.

Yes that's about it, but if you're only going to shoot in good daylight that would not be a problem even at the long (200mm) end.

To hand hold a lens I think the rule of thumb is 1/focal length as a minimum so if you could shoot at least 1/200 of a second you would be OK, similarly at the short end 1/18 of a second should be OK.

And bear in mind VR or OS will not reduce motion blur in the subject, only your own wobble with the camera.

O right, thankyou very much.

Im on the wilkinsons site and Im looking for a 18mm-200mm sigma lens for D3000 and also a 10mm-20mm both AF and OS. Why do none of them have both? you'll find the one you want but the it wont have one feature do they do this on purpose?
