Is this a good camera?

Yes it is a very good camera, until the arrival of the D3 it was Nikon's flagship offering and was/is used by pros worldwide.

Is this a good camera?

In the hands of a skillful photographer it is, gman. But since you need to ask you don't strike me as one, TBH. In which case a D2xs would probably make you look like a dad ferrying his kids to school with a Formula 1 car. I.o.w.: ridiculous and absurd....

W.Smith: you might want to chill out little ;)

I haven't used one, but it always ends up one way or another because of what you expect of it.
Is it for you? Looking into your profile and seeing you have a Canon 400D, I would guess not, but one can never be sure.
What purposes would you like to use it for?
What do you expect of it? Better tracking, faster AF than your 400D has or something else?

I've looked for some samples from the camera and I think you'd be better off using raw with this one (not really much of a problem even if you have a lot of shots and a batch capable raw converter, IMO).

I had a D2x for a year, fantastic camera. You don't say what you want to shoot with it though - so as already mentioned, the fact your asking if Nikons last top of the range camera is any god suggests your not too advanced yet, in which case it may be overkill?

Just out of interest, what makes you both think that gman wants one of these cameras?

All he asked was if it was a good camera. he shoots Canon, so it's quite possible he was just interested in the Nikon range.

Also, W. Smith, I think you're a bit out of order saying that because he doesn't know if a specific model is a good camera he's not a skilled photographer

Sorry for the hijack Gman, and yes it's a good camera ;)

I know sod all about Canon gear, some say I know sod all about taking photographs:lol:, but I never confuse assumption with fact.

Well, it stands to reason that you would ask something like that if you were interested in maybe buying one...do you not think?

If I wanted to know if something was good for no real reason then reading some of the thousands of reviews online would probably suffice - only if I was consideriing a purchase would I go ask on a forum where owners of the camera would be able to give thoughts.

So I don't think it was unreasonable to think he may be interested in buying one :suspect:

Woah, interesting responses! You're pretty much spot on Matt. :)

Point of asking is that my partner's uncle has one and yep he's a pro. I was wondering so that if he decides to upgrade I would know if it's worth snapping the camera off him at a bargain. Oh, I saw his lens cases and one of them is bigger than all my kit combined!

Was also thinking that perhaps I would probably defect to Nikon if he's got spare lenses on the go as I could increase my kit considerably faster than with the Canon! Will need to find out more...

W.Smith, I can see where you are coming from but I don't believe it's just the camera that makes a great photo. All the technical sides to photography can be learnt (which is obviously very important) but I believe it's your eye and imagination that ultimately makes a great photo. This is pretty much his words.

I'm quite happy sticking with my 400D at the moment to learn all the technical stuff but I like to keep my options open. Hmm, quite a calm response for me I reckon considering I'm gagging for a ciggy ;)

See

The noise is a killer though for what its worth. It doesn't show up as much in prints as you would think but it can have lots of noise at higher ISO.

bad noise compared to what though, a D3 or something like a D200?

I had no worries using my D2x up to ISO800, but above that it's not great ( if you compare it against the D3/D300 ) But it was, and still is, a great camera.
