OK - so I've taken the plunge. Previously I had a bridge camera, a Panasonic Lumix FZ18 which I liked but I found was a bit small for my hands and fiddly. Plus in my photography course I felt I was missing out - eg aperture size only goes to F8 but everyone else is talking about f22 etc. So I've decided to go the whole hog earlier than expected and have bought a second hand Nikon D200 with an 18-70mm lens. Should be arriving tomorrow. I'm very excited. :woot:

For those of you with a D200, have you got any advice ? What tips do you have ? Any must buy accessories ?

:thankyou:

Plenty of CF cards, and a couple of spare batteries. Battery life on this camera is only around 300-400 shots, which although probably better than your Panasonic, is not very good for a DSLR.

Thanks - is it worth buying the battery grip ?

I'm not a Nikon owner but have used the d200 - a good camera that you will not outgrow too soon - good choice though

I have a D200 and i don't have a grip, i've considered it for the balance aspect, but no other reason, i just got a second battery from digi-quick i tihnk for 19 quid and i'm happy to change that, i get about 900 shots from a battery.

I always manage to get a full day's shooting with one battery although I do carry a spare "just in case". It's a fine camera and a capable lens. As the others have said some more CF cards are always usefull. The only other comment I would make is to try to avoid shooting at ISOs higher than 800 as the images can tend to get a little noisy after that.

It's a great camera that you will not tire of. I have bought the battery grip, again primarily for balance. I got it from eBay in a good used condition for £50. Yes, it does make the D200 a bit of a beast to carry, but I find it help the balance no end, especially when my 17-55 is on the front.

Failing that, a spare battery or two will do you fine. I have also bought them from Digi-quick and they work just great.

I have a D200 with spare battery but no extra grip, never really needed it. I always try and keep 2 x 2Gb CF cards for shooting in RAW.

Best accessory I have had for the camera is the TP branded Optech neck strap

Thanks everyone for the feedback. It's just been delivered. Excuse me while I disappear for the next few days :woot::woot::woot:

Have fun! Mine came about 2 weeks ago, just awaiting for the 18-70mm lens to come now. I purchased if after owning a D40. Oh and I also have 10gb's worth of CF!
