Hi.
I am planning to buy a DSLR.
After reading all those reviews and talking to lots of people, the choice seems to have narrowed to three cameras
Nikon D200 / Canon EOS 400D/ Canon EOS350D . I am still confused, which one of 'em?

Please help.

There's really no comparison between them. The D200 would be more likely to rate against the 30D I would say.

Yeah the D200 is a big step away from the 2 canons you have posted. Have you looked at the D80, more in line with the 350 and 400D?

I agree, the D200 is in a different league to the Canon options you mention, much more expensive too. ;)

:agree: ... if you are looking at the 400D then the nearest Nikon equivalent would be the D80 ... for price and specs ... ;)

:p

All above are spot on but before you make any decision go to a reputable shop and do the personal thing..touch and test if possible...

What are your needs (and budget if you are willing to tell us this)

Interestingly, for a beginner (rather than an enthusiast) AP mag rated the D40 higher than the 400D last week....

And I still reckon a second-hand D50/350D is the best start in DSLR. Try it for a few months, and if it's your sort of thing, you can upgrade your body, or sell it on if you decide it's too complicated. You don't lose much financially, and either would give you a good grounding on the ins and outs of DSLR use.

The second-hand D50/350D market is thriving these days :)

And back to the original post, I agree that the D80 is probably the camera you're thinking of, as the D200 is a semi-pro body....

The 400D has no seperate LCD screen to check settings and you can't shoot in RAW whilst in full auto mode.

The clear answer for the beginner is the Nikon D50 ;p

Thanks a lot everyone,

D50 looks like a good buy. My budget is 1300$ , but I think spending it in stages would be wise.

il would cut back on the body for the moment as mentioned above, get used to the feel of it, the money you save you can get a good lens,
DSLR's are getting superseeded very quickly , so buy good lenses and then work your way up the ladder with the body.

If your a beginner then a D200 might be out of your league (no offense). It is a semi pro body and requires a good grounding to understand its settings and use it features to its full potential.

Go for a D50, great little camera for the price, trust me.

King.

If you can live with not having access to Canon's 60 + superior lenses...
:D

O.K. SERIOUSLY NOW, the D50 is a great camera delivering results way above what you would expect for its "status" in the market.

It's status in the market being one of the best selling DSLR's?

Totally agreed.

I bought a D50 after having used my older F80 for 2 years. Excellent camera despite me having a little experience already

Again , thanks a lot everyone. I went to the shop last week and had a look at the D80 and the 400D , they didnt have a D50. But i guess with all the comments i have got on this forum , loaded heavily in favour of the D50, i will just wait till the shop gets it.
Are the used ones really worth it? I heard there is thriving market out there for D50's .

D80 is MUCH MUCH MORE CAMERA.

This shares many of the D200's features and at a fraction of its price, have played lots with it...IMPRESSIVE

D50 is a superb cam. How was the D80 (also a great cam) on yuor hands? Because, it is a lil small.
