Hello,

Was looking at a second hand macro lens for my Nikon D200 and would like your opinion on either the:

105mm f/2.8D AF Micro-Nikkor
or
105mm f/2.8G AF-S Micro-Nikkor

I appreciate the f/2.8G has the VR but what other pros or cons do either have.

Thanks in advance for any opinions/advice.

It will. Couldn't tell you which one to go for though. I've only used the VR and it's excellent but I would question how much use VR or the faster focus motor is for macro. Hopefully somebody will be along soon that has tried both.

Thanks Graham,
Do you find the VR is also good for portraits and general photography.

Depends on balance of use. Much macro will be tripod based so the VR not relevant. If most of your shooting is tripod based get the D and put the savings into the next purchse, maybe a focus rail?

The sigma 105 is lighter and the results are just as good. But an old manual macro would do, or just use a reversing ring etc etc.

Macro is a ver Heath Robinson hobby, and can be done on a shoestring.

Took some more advice from a friend of a friend who is a pro photographer, and took the plunge. Got a second hand Nikon 105 VR and very pleased with initial results at home. Now I just got to practice and have fun!!
