Hey Guys,

A little help required please.

I’ve just purchased the Tamron 90mm f2.8 SP with VC USD in the Nikon mount. I am on the look out for a reasonably inexpensive body to pair it with. This pairing will solely be used for Macro Photography only. I don’t know anything about Nikon Camera’s but want one that’s going to shine. Can you suggest a model that will complement the lens and why you suggest it.

Cheers Andy

Nikon D700. Full frame, large photosites so quite good for low light, relatively old tech so should be cheap to get secondhand. I just posted a photo in the D700 thread of a clematis flower taken with a Sigma 105 macro. How macro are you wanting to get? If it's really, really close up you'll want to consider a tripod and camera shutter cable thingy as well.

£450ish - Nikon D610. Really excellent 24mp sensor, low noise, great dynamic range, not too heavy, live view for manual focussing. The only weakness is the AF in very low light, but that's not an issue for macro.

Am in right in saying if I tried to use on any of my Fuji bodies I would lose the VC and USD? I know it would be Manual Focus only...

Yes - VC = image stabilisation, USD = ultrasonic focus motor. You would also lose aperture control - assuming there are no electronic adapters for Fuji (I have no idea)

I think it might make a lot of sense on a Fuji body, APS-C? If it is APS-C the setup will give you the effect of 90mm x 1.5 which could give you the longer lens perspective plus you'll be able to focus very accurately using the magnified view. I find this (the magnified view) a big plus for mirrorless cameras.

As Toni says though, how to control the aperture.

I'd have thought a DX body like a D7200 (or whichever is in budget) would be more useful for macro.

I'm usually out of step with everyone one here when it comes to gear so probably best to ignore me. :D

Most recent Nikon dslrs are very good and should be fine for macro.

I agreed DX body would be best. D500 if you can stretch to that.
