Looking to buy a new lens for my Nikon D60 and has any one got one of these lenses (Nikon AF-S VR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF ED) and is it any good. please advise
thanks Paul:thinking:

I absolutely love mine. I've had it a little over the year and it's hardly been off my camera. It's best below 200mm, but 200-300 it's just fine. I don't know what sort of photography you do, but I find mine fine for motorsport.

Take a look at my site (below), it will give you an idea of what it's like.

Cheers,
Mark

If you don't need the VR you wil save yourself a fair amount of cash going for the non VR version. I bought one for about £110 new several years ago.

I don't have one but if I had enough money I would.

What other lenses do you have and what are you thinking of using it for?

It's a great lens for the money... I've shot some great motorsport pictures with mine. The VR system works very well and the focus and VR are pretty quiet.

I've read that this lens, when stopped down a bit can produce stunning results, and I'm not going to argue :)

Love mine and very much doubt I'll be selling it :D

It's not IF you're going to buy it... it's when

Ah, the trusty 70-300mm VR. My favourite lens for certain. I like my f1.8 AI 50mm but I never manage to get it in focus >.<

70-300mm VR is great for wildlife on a budget (compared to a 600mm lens for example anyway :P) and anything else where you can't get particularly close to the subject, however I suppose this is obvious. For me it was a toss up between the 70-300mm and the more expensive 18-200mm VR. When someone made the point that an 18-200mm would make my kit lens useless, and I realised that I wanted something I could take photos of wildlife with, I was sold.

Here are a few of my examples I took with the lens in question :)

here, here and finally my favourite I've taken with this lens here.

Hope I've been of some use, if you have any questions go ahead and ask :)

Had one for about 18 months now. Absoloutly cracking lens for the money. Nikon have the knack of making the occasional lens that punches well above it's price tag and this is most definatley one. The results I have had on both the D40 and D300 are fantastic.

It seems to be a tad sharper when stopped down slightly but even wide open with the ISO pushed up it produces fantastic results.

Most of the bird shots on my flickr have been with this lens.

Having followed threads on the various options in this focal range it seems that a good proportion that buy the alternatives end up trading in for this lens

HTH.

While the last non-VR lens isn't bad, the VR version is a better lens and the addition of VR makes it a lot more usable. If you can stretch to the VR version it's definitely the one to go for.

It was the first lens I bought for my D60, don't think the non vr verion is the same without the vr it isn't it's vry poor in comparison. Athough I soon upgraded to the Sigma 100-300 and added a 2.4 tc :D.
