Bought mine in 2014 from HDEW for £1600 and had very little used. Just had to send it back to Camserve due to having a loose barrel when fully extended. Just had a phone call saying how much it will cost to fix (£80 approx)+service and dust removal. Seeing this lens is around the £2000 mark now and I understand still can have the loose barrel fully extended ( comon fault I understand) it doesn't put the Nikon brand into good light. To do the repair is a complete strip down from camera mount end right through to the other just to get to the retaining screws that hold the barrel in place.
At least having used this company before I know they will do a decent job and would highly recommend them.

Steve I don't live too far away from " http://camserve.co.uk" . It is a smallish workshop with one guy doing camera repairs and the other doing lenses. No fancy showrooms as the don't sell only repair. Going in there is a bit like walking back into history, it is that kind of place, You can only go as far as the counter just inside the front door but they have everything and more to do repairs with, I could spend ages if allowed, just to look around

Just had a phone call from Camserve saying the lens has been fixed so will pick it up tomorrow.

Hopefully they have done a proper job :)

Hi Steve
I have been checking it out and it appears to be better. Talking to the guy the guides in the outer barrel parts were broken ( tiny little plastic bits) .As for barrel movement yes much better but still a very little movement which he said was normal and overtightening could cause more damage, which i can understand.
took this hand held with it and my hands are not that steady. Cost with VAT about £90 but i can now use the lens without it looking around corners so to speak

unedited and about 40ft away and camera setting not as they should have been_DSC9395a.jpg
quick edit

That sounds a very reaonsble price. I suspect Nikon would charge that just for taking it apart :)

Enjoy your "new" lens :)

actual cost was £96 including VAT. . There are also 3 screws at the filter end to hold the barrel steady when fully extended. If these screws are overtightened they can score the barrel. This video of mine is apparetly within accepteable tolerance of movement, you can actually hear the movement. I would have preferred it to be a little less loose but having tested the lens it seems ok

Cough, splutter. although mine wasn't broken I know the sharpness was deteriorating all the time. It cost over £300 at Kingston to sort it out, but hey! the camera is now sharp at the long end. The only issue I have with it now is the idiot on the other end.
