NIKON AF-S 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED VR LENS

From a search of this forum, a similar question was raised some years ago (2015). I’m interested to know what current opinion is on the following subject.

I’ve very recently switched from ASP/c to full frame - thanks to Steve / Bristolian selling me his D800E.

I’m purely a hobby photographer & don’t look for ultimate performance from my gear. For some time I’ve been using an Afs 18-300mm DX lens which has served me well & was very satisfied with.
I’m considering the 28-300mm full frame version, but reviews seem to be somewhat varied on its performance. I appreciate this lens has now been discontinued & is only available second-hand.

Do we have any users here in possession of said lens that can comment on its performance?

New Nikon 28-300mm

Went out to Goodwood Revival meeting on Friday with the new 28-300mm lens and wondered if anyone was interested in seeing a few shots from this new superzoom. All taken with a D3 1) taken at 105mm 2) taken at 78mm 3) taken at 200mm 4) taken at 300mm 5) taken at 28mm

It's probably OK, although it won't make the most of the high res sensor on your D800E.

I can't imagine it being any worse than the AFS 18-300 DX.

Hi Pete,

I used to own the 28-300 and got some very acceptable shots with it on the D800E, depending on the subject and the focal length needed to fill the frame. It was notably sharper on my D750, which is (of course) a lower pixel count so less demanding than the D800E.

If you are less worried about image quality than getting a memory shot then I think you will find the 28-300 a good all-round lens but it will require some concentration on your hand holding technique.

D800E + 28-300mm is nearly twice the weight of the D3300 + 18-300mm.

I picked up one of my wife's 2Kg exercise weights to get an idea of what would be required in the arm department.
Over a period of time, it might be a step too far for this weakling!
