Nikon 85 or tamron 90

I am looking to buy a lens suitable for portrait work,to use with D300. Going by the various threads these two seem popular( Nikon 85 fI.8, tamrom 90 f2.8).Any advice or recommendations.Thanks
 
Get the Nikkor. It's a fantastic bit of glass and the wider aperture will give you a much nicer boquet. The F1.4 is even better! I have owned both over the years.
 
Tamron gives you macro too. If you're not freaked out by manual focus, the older Adaptall-2 versions are f/2.5 but the mount is usually sold separately, which means £15 - £30 extra.
 
If it's purely for portrait work and nothing else, I'd recommend the Nikon (I used to own one). The Tamron is nice (I have one now), is very sharp however its forte is not portrait work IMHO.

Thanks for the quick and helpful replies.I fancied the Nikon 1.4 but could not jusify the difference in price between it and 1.8 (for home use mostly)
 
On a Dx sensor, why not go for one of the 50mm lenses? Taking the crop factor into account they'll give you the AoV of a 75mm lens on 35mm. The Tamron is a great lens for portraits on 35mm (or FF) but can be a bit long for indoor portraits on a Dx sensor. It (the 90) is a great performer for macro as well as portraits which may tip the scales in its favour if you have the space to use it for portraits.

Thanks for the advice.I already have a nifty fifty,and just fancied something different to play with.My mate is in the process of setting up a studio so I should have plenty of space, if I go for the 85 or 90.Never really tried macro,so something else to consider
