Thinking about this lens..... does anyone have any experience or reviews of this lens? Mainly used for sports in good to reasonable light.

Seems to be lots a varied opinions on this.
I had one but sold it as it was nice and sharp at the short end but soft at the long end, where I used it most.
Mine was VR (latest) version.

What did you replace it with?

I looked at this lens closely as it fitted my needs, however, the experiences of others here and web wide out me off.
Soft at the long end, not that fast to af and expensive for what it is........

Iv just bought a 70-200 2.8 vrii and tc17e......
None of which are the above, other than the tc being silly money in my mind,

Which one? They're completely different. Older D version, not a great lens at all TBH; current G version is excellent.

Yes it would be the latest G version....

I have the latest version & find it excellent. (I also had the older D a few years ago, which I thought was ok, but not as fast to focus)

This is a crop of one these fast moving birds. Lightened shadows slightly in PSE10

If buying today I would consider Sigma 100-400 as well.
Nikon 200-500 is too heavy for me but might suit you.
Both cheaper than 80-400 G.

Nope....cant see much wrong with that....was that at 400?

Just checked & it was actually @ 380mm. (not sure it was intentional though, I tend to zoom a bit .....then forget. :banghead: )
