Ive recently brought the lens second hand, from a friend. I used the lens last week on a rally and to start with, the lens would not work on my D200 body. It was showing a fEE error on the top display of the body. I did a menu reset and took the battery out, and tried again, and it worked fine all day. Great.

So I took the lens to another rally yesterday, to test it properly, started fine, untill the last stage of the day, and I had the same error, I did a reset, and battery out again, but this time nothing. So I put my 18-200mm VR on it, no problems at all. Thought I would try the 80-200mm again, worked again for a few cars then showed the same error code fEE and has displayed it ever since.

Any ideas why this is? I though it may be the contacts on the lens? Is there anyone who has had similar problems who could help me out. I really need it next weekend, so dont want to send it back if I dont have to.
Cheers

Has the aperture ring moved , if it's not locked on the minimum aperture that can cause an error

I bought one from ebay a while back and the lock wouldn't engage, every time I used it the ring moved slightly and sometimes i got errors so I sent it back

have you tried cleaning the contacts on both your camera and lens? It's suprising how often this is the problem. HTH

Cheers Paul

Ive given them a little rub over with a cloth but nothing still.

Ive just had a play with the aperture ring. It was set at 2.8, that caused an error, moved it to 4, that did too. Mover it to 5.6 and it worked, tried it on 8, 11 and 16, works fine, but not on 22. What is it best to set it at> As I can still go down to f2.8 on the camera with the ring set at 5.6.

There is a setting in the D200 from memory that allows you to control the aperture from the lens, not the body. Can't recall it off the top of my head.

If you don't have this option set, you must always lock the lens to its slowest aperture, so something is amiss.

just looked fEE error message up in my handbook and it says lens aperture ring not locked at minimum aperture. Solution, Lock ring at minimum aprture (highest f/-number) HTH

How would it affect the pictures if I left the aperture ring set at 5.6 for the rally next week? I will send it back after that. I pressume i will still be able to take pictures at f2.8?

Well... if the lens is set at f/5.6 it will be f/5.6, the aperture ring physically controls the aperture size, so you can't shoot at f/2.8 if the ring is set to f/5.6 unless its horribly broken.

Remove the lens, and have a look at what happens to the blades when you change the aperture with the aperture ring.

Blades move as they should, with 2.8 being wide and 22 being tight. Ive just taken a few shots and the camera still shoots at f2.8 when set at 5.6 on the ring????

If it doesn't work at all when set to F/22 there must be something wrong with it as that's where it's meant to be set, have you tried it on a different body

Lock the lens at F22 and adjust the aperture from the camera thumb wheel, that should work.....

Its showing the error code on ff aswell. Is there something in the menu which is telling it not to work properly?

My camera is a D80 and ff isn't down as an error code in the handbook, but there is Err, It's not that is it?

TBH something is wrong, it should just work locked to f/22 - no ifs or buts.

I use non "G" lenses all time and it should just worked locked to f/22 etc.

Where would you guys say was best to send it back to? Ive sent a few bits back to Nikon, but they can be expensive.

Its probably worth still getting an estimate from nikon. You can always say no.
