Are there any teleconverters that will work with this lens? I've had a quick look and can't seem to see any but wondering if anyone knows anything different?

AFAIK, none of the Nikon teleconverters work - or, more to the point, fit - on it. However, some 3rd party converters do - I have a Kenko Teleplus 1.5 converter that DOES fit and work on this lens but the results are disappointing. I reckon I get sharper results from cropping images from the unconverted lens.

Cheers for the reply. Only thing is that I'm using a D1X and at 6PM cropping this much would probably cause problems :(

If you want more reach you'll need either

A longer but probably slower zoom (unless you have a lot of money) or

A relatively fast prime lens, the 300 F4 is a reasonable cost 2nd hand and takes a 1.4 TC very nicely.

The Kenko Pro 300 1.4x TC will mount and physically work.

Whether you can autofocus is another matter, as Nikon camera like a f/5.6 or faster, and you are at f/8 most of the time with this lens.

On my D60 I can't lock AF reliably much past 200mm - at 300mm (420mm with the TC) the AF will jitter until (if) it locks.

On my S5 Pro the 70-300 VR + Kenko 1.4x TC locked instantly at all focal lenghts.

On my D700 it will lock but jitters for about 1 to 2 seconds before locking at 300mm (420mm).

Optically I don't think the lens is good enough to take TC's anyway tbh.

The Kenko Pro 300 TC is your only choice, but I would not recommend it on a slow lens personally.

Thanks for the replies. I'm thinking I'm probably best to look out for an older manual prime. :)
