Hey,

I'm looking at buying this lens, I had a look at it and it looks pretty sharp, just wondering if anyone on the forum has any experience with this? Also, am a newbie so a bit hesistant but will need it to wildlife shooting, so any advice regarding purchase would be Greeeeaaat :D

Wish I could offer some opinions, but I'm looking at this lens myself, so I'll be watching this thread closely too. :)

Its a great lens. Loved mine. A mate of mine has just bought one and he can't believe how good it is for the money.
Get one asap!

Thanks for the links, I might go through with buying it, although its probably only as good as the user hehe

Its good up to about 220mm but 300mm needs stopping down.

Small resized web images do not show the optical degradation at 300mm, but all the reviews mention this. And its true.

This image looks good web-sized doesn't it?

At 100% its quite soft, and laden with CA though - NEVER trust small web images :)

Buy it for its stellar 70-200mm performance, and treat 300mm as a bonus.

hey, can I just ask what CA stands for?

chromatic aberation. its typically blue or purple fringing around contrast-y areas ie bright white etc.

My sample produces great images out to about 270mm when stopped down to f/11. Out to somewhere past 200mm it's great at all apertures. By great I mean apparently perfect on a 50% crop or on a 15x10" print viewed at a few inches. It handles very well, smooth zoom action, fast focus, VR just works.

If you want a moderately light, moderately priced tele then there's nothing else worth considering.

It doesn't take teleconverters and it sucks for moving things around twilight so if you're serious about wildlife then you might want the 80-200mm with teleconverters or the 80-400mm, but both solutions are obviously a different ball-game in terms of price and weight.

I have this lens and was very happy with the results I got when I first used it. Not too badly priced and the VR is very good indeed.

If you have problems with CA then try the trial of CaptureNX 2. There's a 60 day demo available from nikons webby. It's much faster now and will automatically correct CA for you.

I haven't noticed any in my shots since I started using it for my raw files!

I have this lens and think its great. Having said that there are times when I wish it would be faster
