What's going on with the stock levels of the 70-200VR? Nobody seems to have them in stock (and those that do are selling them at high prices). Im trying to get one from Kerso but he is having problems sourcing one from the US. Any idea if Nikon are going to be making a new batch, or is it likely that they are clearing the way for a mk2 that works better on the D3? If anyone knows of a source in the UK that has them in stock for a good price, then please say.

At a wild guess? Nikon are preparing to introduce the replacement at the Olympics and stock levels are running low.

Reason for sale is that I want to purchase a fisheye and cheaper zoom lens due to lack of usage. I am away for three days now and will not get any pics online until Monday. I am looking for £975.

Kerso quoted £965 for a new one, so that's too much for me im afraid.

what abouts t4

T4?

Boo, that's ages away.

Its like any decent Nikon lens at the moment. Scarce. The excuse I kept getting was that the pro's are buying them all for the Olympics.
I reckon its all the Canon users that are moving over to the dark side and rekitting!
I ended up buying in the states. Good deal too.

Last time I was in Cambrian Photography of Colwyn Bay, they had one in the window.

It's not just the 70-200 VR. Lots of Nikon lenses seem to very scarce at the moment. For example I had a lot of difficulty getting hold of a 300mm f/2.8 VR, a 300mm f/4, and a 600mm f/4 VR.

There are several factors that could be at work:
  1. Professionals gearing up for the Olympics - but realistically, how many photographers is that over and above those who shoot sports full-time anyway? Not many, I think.
  2. People switching from Canon following the intro of the D3 - primarily pros, which would account for lenses like the 300/2.8 VR and 400/2.8 VR being scarce, but not the 300 f/4. That's really a hobbyist lens, and hobbyists who want telephotos are served *much* better by Canon's range.
  3. Nikon's legendary inability to meet demand - I think this is probably the most significant.
I would recommend Martin's Camera Shop if you want to get hold of scarce lenses. Martin seems to have a knack of sourcing them when other shops can't (or can't be bothered). He got me a 300mm f/2.8 VR when no other shops in the UK had one; he got me a 300mm f/4 when no other shops in the UK or the USA or HK had one; and he says he can get a 600mm f/4 VR in 3-4 weeks which is far better than any other shop I've spoken to. And their prices are pretty competitive too.

(But meanwhile, if you desperately need to use one...;))

funnily enough, the one i ordered months ago arrived in my local store yesterday. however i can't really afford it at the moment so, he's holding onto it for a few days while i make my mind up.

Stewart,

'Nikon's legendary inability to meet demand' - to be fair, they've tripled their lens production in the last four years, which is not an easy thing to do, especially without compromising on quality. Now that everyone has a camera in their pocket, a 'developing room' on their desk, and a personal gallery that reaches every place on earth, more people are getting interested in photography. e.g. me. :)

'Nikon's legendary inability to meet demand' - tried to find a 300mm f/4 anywhere lately without paying full UK retail? :bang:

I'm begining to wonder whether I should take my life wallet in my hands and order a Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 from HK instead or even a Tokina 300mm f/2.8....

Contact Brad at Brad5205@aol.com.
Get him to price it with shipping and then add 6.7% import and then vat. Will still be a good price. ;)
Oh 3-4 days delivery too!

I sold mine a few weeks ago, I hardly ever used it. Good lens and all that, but, between the 80-400 and the 70-200, if one stopped at home then it was the 70-200.

Cheers for the link :)

If I add import duty and shipping to his price it works out about the same as the UK price. That's probably why Kerso didn't get back to me with a quote either :'(

You emailed him? that does surprise me. (The price) My 200-400mm came out at least £500 cheaper than any quote I had from UK suppliers. :D
