This may be a silly question (still new to photography) but Im wondering why my lens doent auto focus correctly on distent subjects. Im using a 70-200 VR + 1.7 tc on a D300. It focuses perfectly out to around a few hundred meters but after that I need to manually focus a touch past infinaty for it to find its mark. Is there a problem with the lens or is it simply my lack of understanding for how the lens works? :) Thanks for your time

Never had a problem with mine
What are you trying to take pictures of at that distance ?
One thing I do find is that the auto focus is so quick that if something like a blade of grass blows in front of the subject the lens will often focus on that instead, can be very annoying :bang:

Nothing really as anything that far away wouldnt be of much use with the resolution on my D300. Just trying to figure out what the limits are on the camera and lenses auto focus abilitys.
Your right about how quick the lens is. The tc does slow it down some but its still pretty quick.

Ok you didn't say you were using a TC, which one ?
Used to use one, it reduces the max aperture which I did find made the lens hunt for focus in less contrasty/low light situations
Now have a 150/500 which works well

Ooooops missed that :cuckoo:
Try it without if you haven't already Mine is a virtual permanent fixure on the camera
