Dear All

There is a 70-200 VR NEW on sale in Amazon for £350 or so pounds from a Spanish Store.
I am aware of the list price and the current second hand value of these lenses.
Curiosity got the better of me though....
I paid with my credit card and have the security of Amazon market place protection.

Looking forward to seeing what arrives and checking in with Nikon in Kingston. I suspect a Chinese knock off..,

Or nothing....

I know nowt of Nikon.........but in an idle moment looked up what I surmise being described.

Two f2.8 VR variants both cost in excess of £1100

How on earth can you think it was described correctly at that price.

I look forward to your update when it arrives???

as the old saying goes
a fool and there money are easily parted

There has been a huge increase is third party scammers using amazon of late, fingers crossed you get what you hope if not at least your money back

Sounds like a scam tbh, although now and again there are errors in Amazon’s pricing and if you stumble across it then you get a great bargain. I got a Scott and Lyle jacket for £33 instead of £95 (direct from amazon themselves), all the other sizes of the same listing were the full £95.

Bad plan, crooks use the illusion of a bargain to lure vulnerable persons. Always have, always will

hmm would that be one direct a brand new seller on Amazon
I can't say i fancy your chances

Interesting that "they" are a telecommunications hardware sales operation company........who though genuine have according to Glassdoor have a high staff turnover!!!

Can it be like the bay and someone else is spoofing them???

Apparently being delivered on sat 29th. I may phone Nikon UK and them to comment...

If it does get delivered please make sure you open and check it before you sign for the package.

I can't think of a way to ask this without sounding condescending but I'm genuinely interested what you would expect Nikon to do should it turn out to be a scam?

Reading the thread, i don't think he expects Nikon to do anything, he is just going to check in with them to see if they can verify that it is real or a chinese knock off

If you like gambling there are things called betting shops.

Taken the money and ran....
Surely Amazon would protect themselves with new (or any) market sellers by having payment terms to transfer the money that take on the sellers behalf later (30 or 60 day terms) rather than immediately. I'm guessing payments go through amazon rather than directly through the marketplace seller.

Wouldn't there be protection through the credit card company?

:D

There is no such thing as a Chinese knock of for this type of lens. He will get a package in the post with a brick in it.

He will then have to file a complaint with Amazon and the fake seller will claim it was posted and will be able to prove it.

Amazon will apologise and say there is nothing more they can do it’s a really common scam that’s being going on for years. The seller will try to do this hundreds of times then disappear and will pop up in a month or so under a different name.

I mean for Amazon themselves rather than the buyer. A Credit Card may protect the buyer but probably wouldn't protect Amazon themselves. I'm sure Amazon have some protection to stop opening themselves up to risk of new marketplace sellers trying to scam and then run with the money.

So far I have never had an issue with Amazon and have nothing but high praise for them and their level of customer service. I expect nothing from Nikon UK except verification (or not) and if it is indeed a scam, they might like to be politely informed that it is in in their name. If I was Nikon, I would want to know. If it is a scam, then I trust Amazon (and their desire to be the most customer centric company in the world) and my credit card company to sort it out.
I personally do not believe the Ebay type scams of posting bricks operate in the same way in the Amazon marketplace.
I will of course keep everyone posted - in the interest of educating us all [emoji16]

erm has the seller now disappeared off Amazon ?

I can still find them on Amazon but all(?) their products fall into telecoms such as Bluetooth earpieces.

Now, as surmised is this a little like a bay seller of minor items suddenly offering for sale high value camera gear???

This maybe 100% unrelated but here is something worth a read about a phishing scam that was perpetrated via Amazon Spain

@MIKEROPHONICS
Hi,.
I wonder as that seller does not appear to still list anything other telecoms items, it might be best to give Amazon support a heads up via their Chat Service rather than wait and see whether you get a parcel and what might be in it. If their system has been compromised surely they should be informed sooner rather than later???

Update: The seller’s account was compromised. Amazon are issuing me a full refund and my bank’s credit card fraud team are fully advised and will pull the payment if Amazon don’t play ball. The bank fraud team have NEVER had any problems with Amazon and praised their integrity highly.
So I will not get a 70-200 f2.8 , but at least my wife knows how much I want one now!
Please therefore avoid OneDirect ES on Amazon and have a great Christmas all!
Carry on

Now you have the mrs on board try for the VRll instead :D

Incorrect. As per Amazon.:-

The marketplace seller does not get the money immediately, apparently they only get their money after Amazon are satisfied all is 'kosher'

This is Amazon's safety net that allows them to offer their A to Z guarantee https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/display.html/ref=hp_1161010_faq_a-z?nodeId=3149571
Thats fine for genuine sellers, However, if the sellers account has been compromised, the scammers may have had access to card details, and could still take the money and run.

That’s not the case. Either from Amazon’s POV or the credit card company. I have asked all the questions and created this post in the vain hope that I might get lucky, and if not, it’s a good education piece for everyone.
