Hi All,

I recently bought a Nikon D40 with the stock 18-55mm lens. To complement this I'm thinking about buying the Nikon 55-200 f4.5-5.6 G AF-S DX.

Has anyone used one? Is it good? At £145 it seems to be a LOT cheaper than the alternatives. I'm hoping to use it for getting some racing pics such as the British MotoGP. I'm sure it's on the slow side to be perfect for this however the faster lenses are pretty much costed out of the equation.

Keen to hear of anyone's experience with it or alternative recommendations.

Cheers.

Got it as part of the package with the D40. Use the 18-55 mostly but it compares favourably with the Canon equivalents apparently

Stronach - My only reservation would be how close you'll get at motorsport with 200mm - I had a 18-200mm Nikon & really missed the 200-300mm end so now have a 70-300mm - I don't really do motorsport pics so perhaps some of those that do will chip in with advice
If you decide on a 70-300mm you can get the highly rated Sigma APO one for similar to what you intend to spend on the 55-200mm

The 70-300 APO will not AF with the D40.

Yeah sorry I can't get my head round that aspect of the D40 still :bonk:
Not sure what to suggest that's AF-S in that price range (?) - My 70-300mm Nikon is AF-S but its the VR one and its more than double the price of the 55-200mm

Its interesting that Nikon have started doing what Canon have been doing forever (well almost!). No Canon EF lenses are screw-driver driven: they all have motors built into the lens, but often not the USM type. Sigma et all have been making different lenses for Canon as they have Nikon in this respect. For Canon they have to incorporate a motor into the lens, whereas for Nikon they do not.

It will just take time for Sigma, Tamron and Nikon to catch up with their lenses thats all.
