Am I right in thinking this won't AF on a D3100 ?

Friend's wife has the D3100 and is looking for a 50mm...

this won't autofocus on that camera so is best avoided - you need the afg version which is a bit dearer.

It won't autofocus on that camera, but that needn't necessarily be a problem. I use this lens quite happily on a D5100, which doesn't support it's autofocus either. If you're prepared to invest some time and patience into learning to focus manually, it's a very nice lens for the price.
Also, there is a focus indicator in the viewfinder which helps quite a bit.
 
Thanks I'll let them know - be nice of the AF-G lens came down in price aswell.
