Would this be a worth while buy? Looking to get my first prime lens and wondering if this would be a good start?

Any advice, much appreciated :)

I bought the 50mm f1.8 and to be honest think I would have gotten more use from the 35mm DX as the effective focal length is half again.....

But on the other - other hand the 35mm F2 may have been better all round as I think bumping up the iso a little is acceptable and the wider focal length would have been a + for me on a D300

And I am trying my best to not buy to many DX lenses - You never know;)

When all the D700 users see that D800:thinking: The market will be flooded with 3 or 4k clicks D700 bodies:naughty:

Very sharp lens.
Read Ken Rockwell's review:-

You did not say what you intend to photograph, Adele, so presumably you know that 35mm is the best focal length for what you intend to do. If not, just shout.

it is soooo sharp !
I got one in Classified for £120 "as-new"

I did look in the classified ads but couldn't find one!

Just got one from simply electronics for £160 free p+p.
My reason for spending: passing all of my first semester assignments lol, now i dont feel as guilty!

It rates well as a lens and despite its higher price is arguably a better first prime for DX than the 50mm f/1.8.

If you're certain to be sticking with a crop sensor go for it. If there's any likelihood you'll move to FX I'd suggest the 35mm f/2 AF-D. It's only 1/3 stop slower but will move with you when you upgrade your body. Metal construction, better build quality, oh-so-sharp and silky bokeh.

50% more to buy new but used bargains available quite often at specialist dealers.

If cost isn't an issue, the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 gives a full stop more speed and I've read great reports about sharpness. If this lens suffers the hit n miss quality control that's reported for other Sigma models, I've never found reports of it.

Good luck choosing and using
