Yes
There is the above lens advertised locally for £400 and described as mint. Comes with everything and boxed etc. I'd obviously be inspecting it before buying and would be using it on my D750 and D7200.
I have the Tamron 150-600 which is a bit heavy for long days out (still keeping it though) and also have the Nikon 70-300mm VR which is great.
Question is, would the 300mm f4 be that much sharper and have faster AF than my 70-300 or at £400 is it a must buy (assuming it is mint as described).
Any thoughts appreciated.
Thanks

That's a decent price for it here in the US, I imagine it's even a bit better for over there. It will be sharper than the 70-300, but it may not AF faster. I don't have a 70-300 to compare and I've never used one.

I too have been looking at getting a faster telephoto lens - but was looking at the more modern
Nikon AF-S 300mm f/4E PF ED VR NIKKOR Lens. Would be interested to see how you get on with the older lens if you get it. Seems like a good price.

300 f4 AF-S is a very good lens with excellent image quality, £400 is a very good price assuming there are no problems with it.

Looking at this comparison - some people have opted for the older lens over the new lens. At the time of the article, there was less of a price difference - but now since the older lens is more readily available second hand and at a fraction of the cost of the newer PF version, it's an attractive option. Only draw back are the weight and lack of VR. So in poor light you might need to use a faster shutter speed when hand held. Saying that, it mentions also that the older lens gives better results wide open with the tc1.4ii

Used to have one, great lens and reasonably light. I moved to the Tamron 150-600 as I wanted the zoom range.

Watch out for squeaky motor when focussing, could be a sign its on its way out although mine would squeak when not used for a while and after 6-10 'focusses' would be fine.

Yep, great lens, only complaint is lack of VR,but spend more and get new PF version if thats an issue.

I would say its a lot better than the 70-300, epscially as that can be soft at 300 - the prime will be tack sharp and af almost instantly.

Buy it.

If it's not gone, let me know and I'll have it :-)

Seeing as I already have the Tamron 150-600mm (although heavy) I'm going to try that locked at 420mm which is about the same as the Nikon 300mm with a 1.4x TC attached and probably around the same aperture setting. See how I get on with that. I've always been happy the results from the Tamron it's just the weight on log days that gets a bit waring but I don't think the Nikon 300mm is that much lighter.

Having had the Tamron 150-600 at the same time as the older 300mm F4, the image quality was far superior on the 300 F4.

But then I upgraded to the newer 300mm F4 PF and that extra £900 was well worth it IMO. So much lighter (has to be used to be believed) and IQ was sharp as a pin (y)

Shame you let that get away tbh......
