My Nikon 300mm f2.8 VR has developed an annoying squeak on focussing - OK there has always been a slight noise when focusing, (i.e. it's not silent), but the squeak now is quite noticeable ........ it's the first VR not the VRll

silent wave motor above to die?? .......... it does not squeak when I manually focus it

anyone had this

we are coming back to the UK over Xmas for a couple of weeks - I know that to expect a two week turn around from Nikon, especially at Xmas, is probably impossible, does anyone know any alternative repairers within say an hour or so of Winchester?

I've heard about this problem when I was looking for a 300 f2.8. Does it only happen when you first use it or is it continuous every time you use AF? I had heard it was the AF motor on the way out. I purchased a 300 f2.8 off ebay, it was really squeaky so I returned it to the seller as they were blatantly selling it on rather than get it fixed. I ended up getting a 300 f2.8 vr1 that had already had the AF motor changed by nikon for this exact problem.

Thanks - you are all cheering me up ............. I suppose it is a £500 job!!!

It's an expensive paperweight/doorstop if it packs in and doesn't get fixed.

I know - I intend to get it fixed as I love the lens and it's the one I take to S Africa with me - that's why I need the turn around in 2 weeks

will call Fixation tomorrow

I had the same issue with a Nikon 200-400 mk1. It was always worse if it hadn't been used for a while & squeaked a bit less as it was used.
I traded it in.

I found this happened with a lens that I had not used for a while. Squeaked a lot as I had not used it for around 4 months, but all fine after a bit of use.

Thanks basically what happened - I have not really used it since last March - I'll give it a go for a few days and see what happens - but I think that in any case having the lens checked is worthwhile

Thanks everyone for your comments

Finally got this repaired and thought that I would post the info for reference

The lens worked OK, but the squeak got louder and louder and would not go away through use, so I thought that I may as well have it checked and repaired

Repaired by Fixation - Total cost = £563

Labour = £275
Parts - replace AFS motor = £179
set up and recalibrate, check and clean
postage £15 - they do a very good UPS next day service
VAT = £94

My 200-400 just chewed its replacement motor the 2nd one was £480.

was that with Fixation

I also asked them to "service" the lens at the same time - "clean and calibrate"
