hi . I have just got a nikon d300 & i am not sure which colour setting to choose . I always shoot in raw {on my d70s** & will continue with d300 I use elements5 for all editing with setting for printing. which is best ?.I have not yet took a photo still reading manual. Have noticed cf card just got a lot smaller though .appreciate any advice.:naughty:

From what I understand the colour setting does not matter when shooting in raw. It can be changed when exporting and converting to jpeg. Unless I am incorrect and someone else corrects me? Hope that helps.

I use the D300 and shoot in RAW, the colour setting only applies to jpeg's. This is a very powerful camera, especially the autofocus. Make sure you read the custom settings for autofocus (a) to get the best from this mini computer - in fact, read the entire book slowly. From my last bit of testing, it will spot meter from any of the focus points selected also. Brilliant camera, have fun.

Spot on...the colour settings have no effect whatsoever to the RAW file. Initially set my D300 to my preferred levels and as abit puzzled when the images appeared in Lightroom as they had been on the LCD, only to immediately lose all their saturation etc and revert to the raw state

I think it may be different if you are using Capture NX to process your RAW files,in that the settings may be saved, but I'm not 100% sure as I don't really use NX.

thanks for your comments, really helpful, I must read up on this matter.

The picture control does effect RAW files. However Adobe software is unable to read the information. If you use Nikon Capture NX to process you RAW files the picture controls are recognised and can even be changed from one to another in processing. For example you can shoot with standard picture control but change it to vivid in capture NX.

That sounds right, wish I could get the hang of NX though....

Flash in the Pan - I am in the same boat as you......still reading the NX manual!

The D3 is using up memory at an alarming rate - going to need a server of my own at this rate.:gag:

The bit of NX I have fathomed is that DON'T open files from the browser - most of NX is not available to use if you do. Open using the FILE button, and open the picture from there for detailed editing. The browser will only allow quick edit controls, what they call "Base Layer Adjustments" - basic light controls only.

The remainder of the NX editing tools require the image to be opened from the file source. The browser is good for using as a lightbox - you can put up several pictures at a time to assess which of them you want to keep and chuck. Very quick and easy way of going through your shoot for a first assessment and editing hard before then picking the few to work on.

Well when i shoot in raw-the colour profile is saved for sure-*** i just changed it from vivid to standard and they are far less severe.

Maybe its *** i edit in capture nx as stated.

But i think standard is good-i took everything off all settings at zero-then use editing software to get the colours you want.
