I have a TC-20E III which I've tried to use with a 300mm 2.8.
Using a test target with the camera on a tripod it's pretty impressive. Image quality degradation is slight wide open, and almost imperceptible at f4.
However, for sport and wildlife it appears to slow the focusing down to the extent that the hit rate is poor (D500). I find it unacceptable and never use it.
1.4 TC is much better in practise.
Similar results with Nikon 70-200 2.8 G2

I've used one extensively with my 400/2.8 (stopped down to f/8) and a modified one with with my 24mm PC-E lens. Lots of examples on my flickr...
