Nikon 28-70 f3.5 - 4.5

Would love to know if any of you have had experience with either the Nikon 28 - 70 f3.5 - 4.5 D or the Nikon 28 - 80 f3.5 - 5.6 D ?

I already own 3 primes in the 28 1.8 G, 50 1.4 G and the 85 1.8 G. I'm looking for a small walk around lens that won't break the bank as I'll be using my primes the most. Can anyone recommend either for my d7000 & soon to be D600? Thanks

The 24-85 af-s is quite light and versatile.
"Old" version now quite cheap as newer VR model has hit the market.
