Hello,

Does anybody have any experience of the Nikon 28-300 VR on a cropped sensor. I have a D700 & a D80 and want a zoom that will do for both. My wife uses the D80 and the zoom would mainly be for her and occasionally for me.

Thanks.

I was wondering exactly the same thing to be honest (until I just bought a Canon........aargh!).
I've just googled reviews of this lens and the couple I read were chalk and cheese.
Given your requirements, I think I would consider alternatives but using the 70-300mm VR lens as part of the mix.

You'll do fine with that as a general walkround lens, but your wife is going to find that wide angle simply doesn't exist. This could be OK depending on her style of photography, but then again it might not be. Just something to bear in mind.

It's meant to a good lens in terms of sharpness, good not great. It's pretty pricey though and still lacking in wide angle on a crop. If that meant that your wife may end up carrying a second lens, I would have thought that the 70-300 or even the 55-300 would make more sense. If it's a one lens fits all, maybe the 18-200 covers a more useful range on the crop body but no idea if it'll do fx.

The lack of wide angle doesn't bother her as she likes to do street photography & artistic crop shots and keeps saying she needs a good zoom. In fact she's never taken the Nikon 12-24mm F/4.0 out the drawer. We need a reasonable walkaround / holiday lens and can't justify buying an 18-200 as well, infact I think it would be too short for her in some cases and with the 70-300 she'd definitely need to carry two lenses. I eventually want the 70-200 for the D700 but would never take it on holiday anyway. I think the 28-300 will be a decent compromise for now.

As said though, there are many mixed reviews around about it and it's not cheap.

Thanks lads.

From what you say, there probably isn't a great deal of competition then so no point splitting hairs on IQ vs. the 70-300 etc.

Closest match is probably something like the 18-270 Tamron. All of these 'super zooms' seem to come with some or a lot of IQ compromise though. You can't have it all I guess. One thing, that you may wish to consider is that the 28-300 weighs getting on for 1kg. I don't know how long it would be carried for but it's quite a big lump!

That's a good point about the weight of the 28-300, I didn't consider it. Actually it might be a pain for the missis to lug it around. As a tester I'll stick the 24-70 on the D80 and ask her if she would really want to carry something of similar size and weight around.

TA.

the 28-300 should be a better than the 18-270 and i've seen decent shots from that.

i use the 18-200 as a holiday lens and i've never really needed longer.

for wide angle i shoot vertical and make a panorama
