nikon 24-70 vs 28-70 vs 17-55

Hello,
Right I have been using the nikon 35mm 1.8 on my D90 and I do miss the zoom while out and about, so I have saved up for a new lens. So what I would like to know is which of them 3 lenses is the best? I have read so many mixed reviews on how the 17-55 was good until the 24-70 came out etc I know a bout the crop factor aswell but I really don't want it that wide as I have the sigma 10-20. I'm thinking the 24-70 as I can get it £1000 from jessops :D

Any info from you guys/girls would be great.

depends if you're going full frame at any point, the 24-70 is a weapon of choice and will cover you for ff

that said you can pick up the 17-55 for about 500-650 second hand which would leave you with more monies for others stuff, filters, other lens etc

all depends on what your plan is and what you're intending to use it for imho
 
well I'm not sure about FF yet, but is the 24-70 really that much better than the 17-55?

No. They're both superb lenses and the suitability of the focal length range is far more important than any miniscule differences in quality.

I don't have any advice for you but would be very grateful if you could share how you can get the 24-70mm from Jessops for £1000?
 
u will not notice any difference form the 35mm to the 24-70 on a d90.

u will only see it on a ff sensor, this is where the pro stuff comes into its own

I brought the "beast" 28-70 f2.8 a cracking lens after that post & then when I went FF (a month ago) I went for/upgraded to the 24-70 f2.8......

I get cashback from my work :) around £180 happy days and the 17-55 will £899

My wife gets cashback through her work, but just like their discount codes Jessops exclude DSLRs and lenses.
 
I've got The Beast. It's just Fabulous. If you don't need wide look no further. There is a used Tropical Grey one in the classifieds for £750. Well worth considering.

Very true but its my work that gives me the cash back not jessops and is only on until Friday., jessops did have anthoer 5% off but as you said not on camera bits!
 
dunno if you can use it but quidco might be of some consideration with that cashback

Yes it is.

I used a 17-55 for a 6-month period on a D2x a while back and the new 24-70 is way sharper across all focal lengths, especially at wider apertures.

It appears to have about the same resolving power as the old 28-70, but the older lens suffers from more CA and colour fringing due to its lack of nano-chrystal coatings.

Buy the 24-70 if you're after the ultimate in sharpness, but get the 28-70 if you're going to beat it against brick walls as the new lens isn't quite as sturdy as older Nikkors according to my sources at Calumet and Nikon UK (based on more being returned for repairs due to impact damage affecting the AF).

Hi Brendan, It's my 28-70 for sale, one thing to bear in mind is that although you could probably knock nails in with it, it's bloody heavy :D
