Nikon 24-70 lens f.28 VR version question ?

This morning i had to take my nikon 24-70mm f2.8mm non VR lens in to have some work done on it as the hood retaining bar had broken on one side. So i asked the service engineer what he thought about the new VR version and i had a surprise.

he said they have had several in for repair for the same fault , something to do with the electronic motor He was saying that a drive was locking up due to a magnet which was affecting something to do with the electronics.

Sorry to be a bit vague but I just wondered if anyone else had heard of this. He also mentioned the new VR version wasn't as good as the previous version ie not as sharp and vignetting
 
I don't know about them having a common fault I know quite a few people that have these and none of them have that issue. The new version not being as sharp etc. has been well known since it launched there was quite a lot of chat about it on here at the time.
 
Very odd that he was so open about it, from my experience Nikon are very hush hush about these things :eek:

Edit: Ignore, just noticed that it wasn't Nikon that you took it to ;)

Thanks for getting back to me on the subject.Ii hadn't heard either about the electronic fault but he did they have had in several with the problem. This is whee i took my lens to be checked over and has good feedback.

All these lenses seem to have some potential issue. The non-VR version is reportedly prone to zoom jamming, which can be an expensive repair. The 28-70 before that can start to squeak as the AF motor begins to die. I've been happy with the non-VR so far, but I've seen it claimed that the VR, while a little less sharp in the centre, is more consistent across the frame. The VR function would be handy, but it's bigger and heavier than the already huge and hefty non-VR.
 
Can't say I have heard about zoom jamming, not to say it doesn't happen. the 24-70 non VR I don't find it too much of a problem weight wise and 9 times out of 10 you will find it attached to my D810. having the Nikon grip on as well tends to balance it all up. Out of all the lenses I have handled still have 7 the 24-70 is my most go to lens
 
Been using the VR version for a couple of years with no issues so far...

I have numerous examples of the 24-70mm f/2.8 VR, and so far none of them have ever had to go in for servicing. To be honest I'm a bit surprised by that: most Nikon zooms (e.g. 14-24, 24-70 non-VR, 80-400) have extremely unreliable zoom mechanisms.
 
AS i said the repair place guy said he had some in for this fault so worth being aware, just in case it happens
