So, after at least 6 months of not buying anything I am now diagnosed with GAS again!!! Cant decide whether to stock with my 16-35 or sell that and get a 20mm prime (possibly the 1.8 but most likely the 2.8). I currently have the 16-35 and 24-70 at the wider end of my lenses. The 24-70 is the general lens I used for paid work and sometimes for personal stuff. The 16-35 gets taken out occasionally but sees more use at the few weddings I do. Obviously I have crossover from 24mm. I generally prefer primes, like the IQ, like the weight and size and also just like using them. 20mm would be fine for weddings when I need wider, and nice to take out as a small, light lens.

Has anyone use both? Is there much between the 2 20mm lenses?

I have the 20mm 2.8. It's old but ridiculously sharp. I advertised it for sale last year (but it didn't sell) and I took some comparison shots with my 16-35 and when viewed at 100% at comparable apertures it was definitely sharper.
I've just bought a D810 and unfortunately I've read somewhere that it's not really suitable for them so I might look at the F1.8 or maybe the Sigma 20mm F1.4.

Hi Simon;

My only input to you here is;

i recently bought a new 16-35mm f4 VR and not long sold it and bought the 20mm f1.8G instead as I'm more a prime guy, I haven't had much chance to use the 20mm f1.8G due to work commitments, there's many images here on the D800 thread shot with the 20mm f1.8G and it's sublime.

I'm slowly changing my Nikkor lens line-up for primes only;
20mm f1.8G : 28mm f2.8D : 60mm f2.8 Micro : 135mm f2 DC

Regards;
Pete

Always been happy with my old 20mm f2.8D but never used it on anything above 24MP

Well you would hope that newer computer designed lenses would be better than what must be a 25 year old D design. I'd be disappointed if a G wasn't. It depends on your budget and the practical application of the lens performance. If you can make sharp A3+ prints I'm happy with it. If you have the money and are happy or need to carry a bigger, heavier f1. 8 or zoom, that's the way to go. At f8 I doubt anyone could tell the difference between any of them, but maybe close to wide open, or you need sharp to the edges of the frame then the extra spend is worth it. Why not hire or borrow the 20mm and see if you prefer it?
