Hi All, I have been without a kit lens for a year now and have been forced to use my 35mm f1.8 AF-S prime everywhere i go and i have actually fell in love with it, i love the crispness and the fact i can use it in low light and it's also light and small.

With this in mind i have decided to build a small collection of primes to shoot on from 20mm to 70mm, I have a 10-20mm UWA that i will keep for now until i can spend an obscene amount on some pro wide glass and i will be saving for a decent tele (this isn't important at the mo as i don't do a lot of tele stuff).

I am selling my 70-300mm VR to fund the first prime purchase so have around £300, i can prob add about £50 to this maybe £100 but definitely no more than that.

Now i know i want a 50mm and i think ill just go with the f1.8 as they are dirt cheap and an 85mm is last on my list at the mo, but what does everyone think about the 20mm+ zone? I don't know whether to go 20mm, 24mm or 28mm? The 20mm ive heard distorts at 20mm, the 24mm soft at 2.8 and the 28mm ive heard is not good at all and if im honest a little close to my 35mm?

What are peoples experiences with these lenses and what would you recommend? Please don't mention the awesome 24mm f1.4 i haven't got £2000 for it! Lol! Im a little gutted really as Nikon don't really do anything in the 20mm zone that's fast for a reasonable cost but hey-ho, im sure everyone else feels this way (Nikon users!)

Ill be using them for general Photography and convenience isn't a problem as i have 3x D300 bodies to use. Anybody help me out?

Thanks.

I had this problem, earlier this year, I have a 35mm F2.0D, and as with you that ruled out the 28mm, the 20mm I had read some bad things about as well, so went for the 24mm. I haven't had a problem with it, but then I there would be far better people here to look for failings in it.

Here is an example if it helps:

if your on dx buy the 20mm and 50mm

pureley on the spacing it gives you

read ken rockwells how to use a wide angle

Thanks JohnF, your image looks really nice and crisp, what did you shoot it on if you don't mind me asking? You've definitely got me swaying towards the 24mm side more!

I think based on what ive seen and read im gonna go with the 24mm, I figured i can use my UWA at 20mm if needs be. Ill get a 50mm a bit down the road i think, i was going to just spend about £80-100 on a 1.8 but i think i might wait a little longer for a 1.4 for that extra £100, it seems worth it?

Thanks for the insight Straycat but im not sure the article helps? I know how to use a WA lens, i was really just wondering what focal length prime to go with, the lowest focal length i was considering was a 20mm which acts as a 30mm on DX so not really that wide? Im also unfortunately maybe one of the few who find KR a bit pretentious and arrogant hence why i post on a forum, I prefer the opinion of down to earth photographers who don't over-analyse things and tell me i shouldn't have certain kit unless im a pro? Thank you for the insight all the same though.
