Any direct experience of how this lens performs with the 1.4 and 1.7 teleconverters? I'm thinking about taking the plunge but the option of cranking it out on my D850 is a dealbreaker. Not worried about lowlight; almost always will have decent daylight and predictable subjects. Am I likely to be disappointed optically?

I don't shoot Nikon, however: from experience using Sony gear- TC work well if the max aperture is f2.8 as a rule - I use my 1.4x on my Sony 70-200mm f2.8 works a treat
that said it hates my Sony 200-600mm FE lens which is a f5- f6.3 lens

:Les :)

I used one with 1.4 mkiii, the IQ deterioration was marginal to be fair, I've not used a 1.7 though.

Many thanks - I had read somewhere that it worked fine with the 1.4. I believe it tries to focus with the 2 but doesn’t. So wondered if the 1.7 was an option at all. Some lenses get on with TCs and some don’t; so it appears to be one that remarkably does….

Personally I wouldn't. Sharpness wise it's just acceptable at the long end wide open without a TC. Also, you will find that the AF will be painfully slow if you had to loose more light. So if you're only shooting a static subject, in bright light, and able to stop down the aperture to f8 or slightly higher, then yes. I'm sure that you're aware also that sharpness with a high MP body like the D850 is less forgiving. But then again, what is unacceptable to one person may not absolutely OK to someone else. Best advise would be to try it for yourself.

Thanks Des

I guess your advice is probably spot on. A piece of me has obvious reservations about the whole idea and I guess those reservations have a sound basis!

Newest 1.4 will be okay but a 1.7 won't be pleasing.
