I'm thinking of buying one of these, thing is are they any good and worth the dosh.
I can get one for £429.00 nw from a shop.

I guess it depends upon definition of "good".

They're not the fastest (aperture) and not the best quality at any of the focal lengths (i.e. you could buy two or three other lenses and have better quality). On the other hand it is massively convenient, and quality is still very good. Just depends what you're used to and the features you need.

Have a look here for a good summary of this and other Nikon lenses

Edit : For what it's worth I have one as a walkabout lens, and I love it.

As said - it's a good all round "walkabout" lens. Not brilliant by any stretch of the imagination, but convenient.

You should be able to get it for less than £429 - I got mine for £400 by hunting around, finding the best price and then finding the nearest store who did price matching.

Probably worth going along and taking a few shots with it first, then examining them. Maybe see if they have the Tamron/Sigma etc equivalents and trying them too, as they are slightly cheaper.

There was also another thread a couple of weeks ago on the same lens, you'll find many fans of the lens here as a walkabout / travel lens. Personally, if you have the money, I would go for the Nikon. Ken Rockwell (famous Nikon user) gives it a rave review.

Kerso is a highly recommended seller on this forum and he sells for under £400.

Good luck with the hunt.

It really is a good lens, its been on my last 3 cameras nearly all the time, but, many tend to suffer from lens creep after a while.
I just got mine back from Nikon, I sent it because the lens was creeping badly and it didnt focus as well as it it used to. They said it was working within specification, but they serviced it, fixed the lens creep for me and it focuses as it should now.
It just so nice to get it back, I`d forgotten how quiet it was and how quick it focuses.
I can heartily recommend one.

I have just sold my kit lens and 55-200 VR and bought one of these. I am very happy with it, and as said before its massively convenient. And now I'm learning to use it and the camera properly, its producing some very good stuff. I would recommend one...

PS - I got mine from ebay for £357 delivered.

This is actually an excellent lens. The only downside is the aperture but it still produces super sharp images. You'd be surprised how well it can perform!

It's so convenient! I'm not sure if I want to sell mine! I already have an 18-50 f2.8 and a 70-200 f2.8 AF-S VR!

And, just to show you how convenient it is as an everyday walkabout lens, here are two shots from last year, taken from the same place, first at 18mm, second at 200mm, both hand held

18mm

200mm

Both jpegs and straight from the camera ( and unstraightened! with a Nikon D80)
