Ok this will probably sound a numpty question but anyway, am I right in asuming the Nikon d5000 is DX if so has anybody used Nikon 18-105mm F3.5-5.6G DX ED VR AF-S with the d5000? any good? I need something better than the 18-55 kit lens and already have the 70-300mm.

Thanks

18-70 is another good option, offers slightly better aperture, and much better build quality. The only advantage with the 18-105 is the VR and slightly longer reach.

Yes, the D5000 is DX..... so imho you have 3 real choices in that range from Nikon.

18-70 no VR (but don't let the lack of VR put your off, its a great lens) - about £100 2nd hand
16-85 VR (expensive and heavy, i ruled it out on price even though it has brilliant IQ)
18-105 VR - again, about £100 2nd hand.

I plumped for the 18-70 on my D3100 as it got glowing reports, but the 18-105 does come well regarded too.

Maybe the 18-70 sits better with your 70-300 with no overlap? or if you fancy upto 105mm in one lens your decision is made?

I was wondering the same thing, I have the 18-70 and was thinking about swapping it for this. How is the sharpness when you compare the two?
