I've got d7000 with 35mm f1.8 and Nikon 70-200mm f2.8. I am looking for a nice portrait lens for my kids. I had Nikon 24-70mm butunfortunately it got lost in USA earlier this year!!!!😒. I was really heart broken as it was my favourite lens and nearly quit photography. Now I'm thinking of redeveloping my hobby. I am thinking of buying another portrait lens with zoom. On reading reviews most of the photographers advise 17-55mm for DX bodies over 24-70mm. Then I came across 17-35mm f2.8 which has got smaller range but is more expensive. I couldn't understand the logic. Both are f2.8.

Why would anybody go for 17-35mm and pay more over 17-55mm??😳

The 17-35 is a full frame lens hence the cost. Personally, if its for portraits I'd go for the 24-70 again.

Everybody says 24-70 is better as its future proof if you plan to go to FX later but I'm not really planning to do that. I'm quite happy with DX. Is it still a better choice than 17-55mm?

I'm slightly confused here as you said you want a portrait lens and you have the 70-200? That lens is superb for portrait especially at 200 end!
Anyway you should have a look at the 85mm f1.4 or the 105mm DC if you are looking specifically for portrait lens.

I love 70-200mm but it's too long for indoor photography. I do have 35mm f1.8 which I use most of times inside house but I miss the zoom specially when my daughter is just jumping here and there so that's why I was looking for 24-70 or 17-55mm

I wasn't really thinking in the context of going to fx. Just that the longer end is likely more useful than the shorter end for portraits and the 24-70 gives you more range to play with there.

I've been using my 24-70 exclusively indoors today. Very versatile on my d7000 never found wanting for being able to go wider.
