Just got my copy this afternoon

anyone use this lens?

I'll post a few images tomorrow when I have taken some

would be great if you posted yours

what do you think at f/1.4?

he's an image of one of my grandchildren @f/1.4 - it's a big crop, but the D850 files are so big the crop results can be quite good

(previously I've used the Nikon 105mm f2.8VR quite a lot for "portrait" shots)

Hands/rope look sharper than her eyes?
Slight adjust required?

Thanks Chris, fair point

I think that I just missed the focus on this one, (or was too near) - I've noticed that the MFD is farer away than I expected, but according to the spec it's 3 feet so maybe I do need to check and adjust

I have a copy and I do like it, but it does have a learning curve attached to it....

I like to use mine as an alternative to the 200 f2. In comparison, the 105 is miles easier to carry and use, however, on the D810, expect a number of AF errors....

I figured you'd want to see images shot wide open:

In all honesty, I rarely shoot my wide open.... I usually (for portraits) shoot at 2.2 or thereabouts, to me it's a more pleasing dof... but what do I know

Thanks guys - I realise that f/1.4 needs skill especially with the large MP sensors

What are you hoping to achieve with the lens OP?

I only ask as although I like collecting Nikon lenses :nikon: in all honesty.... I think the 85mm 1.4 D is a better lens for portraits :exit:

I realise the sunglasses isn't ideal, however it's in the name of privacy :)

I found the 85mm just a little too short - I've been using the Nikon 105mm f2.8VR and the Nikon 70 200 f2.8VR for shots of the grandkids and for "portrait" type shots as the farer I am away from the grandkids the better - I've also used the 300 f4VR PF which again keeps me a good distance from them, so I thought I give the f/1.4 a go as I like trying new stuff - I've only taken a few shots with the lens - the lens seems to "like" certain types of "shots/situations" and "dislikes" others, if I can put it that way - but as I said I've only taken a few shots as the lens only arrived this afternoon.

Yes - it’s a lens that really shines in some circumstances - but the slow af can be a pain when shooting faster moving children….

These days, with my eye sight and glasses, there is no way I could manage without (good) AF - I have tried with and without glasses with the appropriate diopter adjustments, but it still can be a pain.

I've always liked Nikon glass - the 105mm f/1.4 is well made and IMHO, if you don't mind spending that kind of money, worth it for a specialist lens.

I do find that most good quality lenses shine in certain situations but do not always in others, hard to exactly describe what I mean

The 70 200mm f2.8VR works well with kids, but it's an unbalanced heavy thing hanging on the body

The 70-200 is not meant to be hung on the camera body - best to hang the camera on the lens!
