This wonderful lens arrived today intended for my D3/D800,

From MPB and in excellent condition ( which it is), however it has the infamous AF squeek, mainly from far to close focus ( and vice versa).

Shall I send it back? I heard differing opinions from 'The AF will die soon' to ' Mine squeeked forever and its till going'. It was £330 and based on many reviews OpticalLimits there isnt a 'great' standard zoom for Nikon so instead I could pick up a 35mm prime as I already have the 50 1.8G, the 70-200 VR Mark I and the 14-24 2.8

Thanks

If I were in your shoes I would send it back in a heartbeat.

You're right in that it could go either way, but in the circumstances I wouldn't take the chance. If I'd owned it from new I'd probably just keep my fingers crossed, but second-hand - not a chance.

Af squeak does seem to show the motor is somewhere between about to die or could go on for some time but I wouldn’t risk it when you don’t have to.

How cheap was it?
I've had Nikon lenses with the AF squeak. I had one that if you ran it through the focus range a few times would quiet down until it was left set again, lasted many years that way. I just paid $900 to have the AF motor replaced on my 400/2.8.

One thing is for sure, it won't get better; and a lens that is constantly squeaking is very annoying.

EDIT:
That lens is no longer serviceable/supported should it get worse in the future...

I sold my excellent 24-70 lens to MPB recently for more than that...was the fact the lens has a squeak hidden in the description.. I borrowed a lens from them recently which had the squeak and if you look at the lens profile they do mention it and have adjusted the price accordingly...

Yeah I don't remember checking for a squeek desciption ha, although I'm not sure you can grade something excellent potentially with what seems a well known issue

Send it back. AFAIK the lens can't be repaired by Nikon anymore and it was expensive to fix anyway. The squeak means it is going to fail, how long it lasts is pot luck.

I've recently acquired a 70-200 VR II which was fine during the test shots and then made a few squeaks a few minutes after buying. It's been used 5-6 times since and behaved seemingly ok. Was a good enough price so I'm going to chance my luck and hope it stays decent. Fingers crossed.

I've just bought one of these as well and I'll need to listen out for this squeak. The VR motor sound worried me for a second until I worked out what it was! lol

I only managed to induce the squeak when I pressed the AF button with it pointing at a downwards angle. It did it a few times for the rest of that session, and I could hear the mechanism 'wail' quietly when I ran the focus range by hand. Since then it's been ok, so hopefully it'll not cause any major bother. I can live with a squeak, but AF failure would be rather inconvenient.

The VR is definitely more noticeable than others I've owned. Sort of a whirring/churning kind of feel. Never found that with all my other VR lenses (more just a clunk on engagement/disengagement).

Well Evri went and delivered my mpb return to the wrong place in Brighton and I didnt pay for extra insurance so thats a potential £300 down the s***ter and not even a lens to show for it!

Whatever possessed you to use Hermes Evri? Everyone knows they lose more than they deliver.

I'm sorry for your loss . . .

When I returned a lens to MPB they arranged collection using DPD, as they do when selling them stuff.

Well the good news is it did go to MPB just the wrong office, I used the address on the cancellation form on the site which now apparently is a broken link. They have sent someone over to collect the package and have it processed by end of day, that is good customer service
