I have had my D700 since Feb and am now looking at adding another lens..

Q1, I am thinking of buying the Nikkor 70-200 2.8 VRII, I have read that this lens works best with edge to edge sharpness of on a D300, but there is a possibility of vignetting on a D700, is this true? Does anyone have experience of this lens?:help:

Q2, I was also thinking of buying the Nikon 2x converter to use with the 70-200 Lens. Has anyone used the two together? or have any suggestions of what would be the best converter?:help:

Many Thanks

Ian.

If you want this focal length you won;t get better then this lens. Period.

It works well with the TC-2E III teleconverter although personally I prefer to stick to the 1.7x.

i use it on the D3S and haven't had any issues with vignetting. I love it :D

It was said that the older, VR I, had vignetting issues with full-frame; this was since resolved with the VR II release.

As for the TC, as Ryan says, the TC-E III works perfect with the VR II. As if they're made specifically for each other.

I use mine on all my bodies - fantastic lens - esp on the D3.

Thank you to all for your comments. I think this is the lens for me. Just need to sort out the finances....

Thank you

Ian.

As others said: it was the VR-I that gave vignetting on full-frame (and not that much - I'm still quite happy with mine on D3 and D3x).

VR-II is super-peachy by all acccounts...

I've been using the 70-200 VRII on the D700, at times with the newer 2x converter. Both produce the most amazing images - with no vignetting whatsoever.

That's great thank you you have all sold it to me.
My main uses for it would be for Motor Sport, Wildlife and Dog shows my main lens at present is the Nikkor 24-70 2.8 and what a fab lens this is... if the 70-200 is the same quality as this I will be over the moon. :D

it is - you will be! It might even be sharper!

Oh it is Ian, it is :)

I have both and they are an absolutely perfect match, where the 24-70mm leaves off the 70-200mm simply takes over. You get exactly the same performance and look to your images on the D700.

Shooting longer length differential focus with it is just sublime. You won't regret it I promise, they will have to prise it from your cold dead hands....... Ok you are going to love it ;)

This lens is the mutt's nuts and I had the same dilemma. However the results from both my D300 and 700 are sublime. If your credit card allows it, do it!

You sound emotional Alison, surely it can`t be that good..................:naughty:

I've just finished shooting a wedding with both Ade and I honestly don't think I have used a pair of lenses that work like that, in perfect harmony and you can't see the joins! Where one ends the other just carries on! They really are just the perfect duo.

I have some primes that I adore for some applications but I can honestly say that in all my years shooting I have never come across such a well matched pair of lenses. I had someone at the wedding today exclaiming that of course primes were better...... until he saw a blown up version of what I was shooting on the 70-200 :)

Go on - make it a trio of lenses! I just recently got the 14-24 to add to the 24-700 and 70-200 VR11 - just amazing. :)

Last weekend I assisted at a wedding - first time using the 70-200 VRII on my D700 - I was rather blown away.

My standard zoom is a Tamron which I'd considered sharp, but the Nikon Lens had much more reliable autofocus and discounting the extra weight, was much more ergonomic.

I'm looking to change my Tamron 28-75 to a Nikon 24-70 as soon as I can.

I have to agree with all of the above comments. I've had my vrII from the day that they were released and it is simply superb. Pair it up with the new 2 x converter and it's a seriously happy chappy.
It's quite funny how everyone thinks its a superb lens. There was a time when some (not on here I don't think) were slating it for fairy dust and poor casting inside.
I said at the time, the real test is in the results you can get from it. Some folk were looking through the wrong end of the lens....
Get yourself out there and buy one. :D

Well I can't wait to go out and buy this lens.... I've got a wife who's doing her nut because I am raiding the piggy bank and asking for an early Christmas Present and Birthday Present, any donations gladly accepted  I JUST CAN'T WAIT!!!!

With all the advice that you have given me - You  your VR 1 & DONT need the VR II... Just yet anyway ;)

another yes for the 70-200 VRII, super sharp and super fast focusing on a D3 at least, when I finally lay my hands on the 2.0 TC III i'll let you know how good that is as well, but thats another story!

I would like to thank you all for your responses to my Questions, I'm looking to buy at the end of next month. :):):)

Silly question coming....

Do I take it that the VRII & TC-20E III is betterif not awesome than with the TC-20E II then....

I have the 70-200VRII and also the new TC 20E III

Pretty pleased overall, though I've found the TC can give some strange boke effects on things like grass or trees if they are a long way away, also, the VR seems to cause alot of softness when the TC is attached

Shhhh don't say bad things about VR because nobody will believe you.... :)
