Nikkor 35mm 1.8g vs 18-55 kit lens

(sorry if stupid question)

Basically, just bought a 35mm 1.8g for my D3100. Obviously around F/1.8 the 1.8g will perform better, but when I want to use 4/5+ aperture will my kit lens perform better or worse that my prime?

Sorry if its a stupid question. :nuts:
 
Not a stupid question at all, hope my answer isn`t either!.......

I have the same combo of as you and I prefer the 35mm for everything except where I need the wider angle of the kit lens, i.e. Landscape, buildings etc. I think it performs better than the kit lens at 35mm regardless of aperture...I also like that the 35mm lens makes you think about the composure rather than zooming in or out...

The photos displayed below were taken with the 35mm f1.8 lens and Nikon D3100....

Thats good to know, I'll use my 35mm as my main lens now then unless I need a wide shot for a landscape.

Was thinking of in the future getting a 50mm prime and a 10-20mm wide angle which means I am then pretty much covered from 10-50mm with some nice lenses. :)
 
the 35 1.8 at f4 is really, really sharp. It is as sharp at 1.8 as the kit lens is at 35 mm wide open. The 35 is really a step above the kit lens in about every way you can imagine.

Stick the 35mm on until you need a little more reach/wider view.

I prefer the primes (although others have posted tamrons I think 17-50).

I have a selection of the prime lenses and one zoom (tokina 11-16) which should have links to pics on the signature.

Using just the 35mm does make you think and move a little more to get the picture :) although I have a tendancy to try to shoot @ f1.8 all the time :lol:

There isn't much in the 500mm to 35mm... Bit further away is all...
 
Nearly all lens when stopped down are sharper than being wide open. I would imagine 35 @ f/4 would be much sharper than your kit lens shooting wide open @ f/4.
 
optic wise the 35mm f1.8 wins. But then comparing a prime against zoom lens is not very fair in a way. If you happy to use the 35mm all the time then it will produce better image then the 18-55 kit lens.

If you into wide angle that sort of stuff then the 35mm will suffer because it don't go that wide. I would suggest use both.

35 seems a bit more 'contrasty'. I've not used my 18-55 since I got the 35mm. This is only on a D3000, but i'm really happy with the setup and does me:thumbs: The 18-55 is actually a fairly good lens though.

I was in 2 minds whether to sell it, but it's just the non VR kit, wont be worth very much, so be as well keeping - For the handful a times a year I use it....

I have a 55-200 non VR and people dont seem to think much of that lens, but I love it as well....when the 55-200 is on, I find myself forgetting I can zoom I have the 35mm that often:lol:

Cheers for the replies! I havn't actually felt as if I needed the extra zoom yet. If I want anything more than 35mm I would probably be best off using my Tamron 70-300mm. I do however feel I would like a wider shot sometimes.

I'm also in the habbit though of keeping it on 1.8 and loving my blown out backgrounds. :p
