As above thoughts on these lenses please.

If I get the Nikkor in a couple of weeks I'd also be looking at the 1.4 TC shortly after.

I'm leaning towards the prime rather than the zoom.

Ideally would like the 2.8 but also need a holiday this year.

why the 80-400mm its slower..why not consider the 100-300mm f4 that way you retain the speed of the prime but benefits of a zoom..

I`ll be watching this thread with interest as I was looking at the same/similar set up
Nikkor 300mm f/4D ED-IF AF-S with (1.4 tc at a later dade) or the Sigma 100-300mm f/4 EX DG IF HSM. I want my set up to cover motor sport & wildlife basically everything
(at the moment the largest lens I have is the 80-200 f2.8D)

Again a very slow lens for moving subjects..af is supposed to be very slow on the nikon 80-400mm..I was going to get the nikon 300mm f4 but decided the sigma with its zoom was more handy for me..I do a lot of sports at the weekend and the fixed length would have been too restricting. review of the sigma http://www.photozone.de/Reviews/Nikkor / Nikon Lens Tests/369-sigma-af-100-300mm-f4-nikon

I already have a 70-300 VR which I can easily use handheld.

I'm considering the F4 300 because the faster aperture will allow me to use a 1.4 tc with af when i need to and larger tc with mf should i so desire, while keeping a reasonable max aperture for control of dof.

...But the sigma works wonderfully with a 1.4 and retains auto focus also..

Hmm decisions...............

I suppose the price may have some influence. the sigma is around £900 but I have an option on a lightly used nikkor (the swine got a big bonus and is getting the 300 2.8 and is willing to sell his f4 for around £500

where you buying Harrods!!! lol..the sigma is £740 at warehouse express and even cheaper from some of the hong kong dealers on ebay..easily pick a decent used one up for £500...Paid £450 for mine and its a newer dg version.

Don't work for sigma by any chance?;)

Given me something to think about now.

:lol:nah but the 100-300mm is worthy of the praise..

Get a used Sigma 300 F2.8 or 120-300 F2.8 :)

Well I'm still undecided you have all given me food for thought I'm going to have to try out the 100-300 Sigma for flexibility and 300 Nikon because its a Nikon prime both to be used at a later date with a 1.4tc.
BTW is a 1.4tc compatible with a Nikon 80-200 f2.8D Ive heard there is a little vignetting with it.
I hope you didnt mind me jumping in here PsiFox.

Ive had my 80-400 VR for a while now and its one of my main lenses, pretty much lives on my D200. AF can appear slow as its driven by the camera rather then the lens having its own motor. I shoot a lot of moving subjects and it keeps up with everything that i've thrown at it so far.

Not at all:)

I'm swayed by the Sigma 100-300mm f/4, but the used price of a 120-300mm f/2.8 is just too tempting...

I'm facing the same choice, but I think I'll take the portability of the f/4 over the f/2.8 for now.

Plenty of time to add one later.

In a similar boat myself, 100-300 f/4 for extra length + sharpness, or the 70-200 f/2.8 for the max aperture :/

120-300 f/2.8 is my answer, but out of my price range

Brother in law is going thro the same thing hes hired the 70-200 f2.8 is for a week I think. He will probably buy one

then thinking of the 1.4tc at a later date

Seen a F4 300mm Nikkor new in UK for £549.00 this evening.

Don't know anyone that wants a LST2 with a shedload of spares do you?

Would help my lens fund along nicely.

Well I use a nikon 300mm f4 af-s and I think its a superb lens, i got it brand new just over a year ago for a safari trip and I combined it with a Kenko pro 1.4 tc and they were a dream to use, This lens combo are by far my most used for birding pics, the lens is very light and well balanced, no vr though but for the price it was good value, I got mine from dig rev. hong kong, great service and the £250 saving made it affordable for me.
I would like more reach but that will have to wait for now !!
