I have seen quite a few cracking night photos on this site of the Southbank and was thinking of having a go myself. Being a country boy and venturing into the big city I was wondering if I need to take any precautions with regards to personal safety and not having my gear nicked. Sorry if I seem a little paranoid just wanted to tap you seasoned city photographers advice.

Personally I would not do it on my own as I would be out of my comfort zone, I would probably take a couple of mates, 6 eyes are better than 2 or even 1.

I regularly go solo and am not the sort of person who could handle himself but I have never seen any issues along the south bank, there will be a hundred others toting slr's alongside you so it's never been a worry for me!

In the main areas you'll be fine. Besides, you'll have a tripod for hitting people with
If you feel uncomforable take a friend, but chances are you'll be absolutely fine. I felt the same way as you when I went to Brooklyn at night, and realised I had nothing to worry about.
Trust your instincts, and be wary of people around you. Keep to well known, well lit places, the same as any other town/city.
Have fun, it's fantastic at night!

In my case I am 64 years old in a months time and I cannot handle myself anymore and if Mrs H was with me (only a year younger than myself) I would worry about her safety as well as 2x Canon 5DIII's with "nice" lenses on.

I suppose at the end of the day the Mrs can be replaced.

Every cloud has a silver lining

I was born and grew up in Ladbroke grove, only moving to Kent in my early Twenties.

I feel very safe in most London area,s still and central London in normal hours are very crowded and very safe, just be sensible,be aware of your surroundings and be away before say midnight.

Nothing to worry about.Enjoy.

A mate of mine has just moved to Ladbrooke Grove. Has to park his car 15 min walk away.

Back on topic: I recently went to London to grab some shots. Took the wife and the mutt, Things didn't go to plan so got Pizza and went home. We took some shots of the O2 then just seemed to drive around.

Maybe a little meet may be on the cards
