Night Watch

A gigapixel image of a huge(?) painting.....and it is big, we saw it once on visit many years ago.

That resolution of photographing it really does give it a new/different 'dimension'.

Thanks for the heads up about it :)

That is spectacular - thanks for posting.

Brought back memories of a trip to Amsterdam, must be about 25 years ago. Took a trip on a coach to visit bulb fields. On the return journey the driver stopped outside a small town and explained that he couldn't take the coach into the town but a short walk would reward us with a view of the Night Watch recreated in full size from flower petals.

I have searched for photos but can't find them. I did, however, find this after much searching - shows the size, but is also an incredible work of art in it's own right.

This is pretty cool. It's a nice snap of the Night Watch painting.

Now zoom in. And some more :)

And if you like Will Gompertz, here he explains all about this photo and the painting it is of.

That is great.

It reminds me of a series that was on Radio 4 a few years ago. Radio seems an odd medium to look at paintings in detail but you could look online at a high res photo of a painting while listening to the programme. I don't know if it is still available.

I saw it when I visited Amsterdam in 2002, which was also the first time I'd ever really taken the time to look around an art gallery (nowadays I go on holiday to visit galleries, for example the van Eyck exhibition in Gent in March). It's an exceptional painting and I enjoyed the article.

Seem to recall a small group called "The/Night Watch". Demonstrating medievil instruments of music. Much more entertaining than you might think, probably down to thier style of delivery.

We were in Amsterdam just 2 weeks before The Lockdown, and saw the Night Watch in the Rijks, with all the scanning paraphernalia. Apparently, it's a 44.8 GIGApixel image, comprising over 500 separate images, taken using a Hasselblad 100Mp 'Multishot' cam, that produces a file of 2.4Gb. Each. 600 TERAbytes of storage needed. I suspect my ancient 2006 Apple Mac might struggle with stitching all those together. I worked out that each image would be 182mm wide, and I'd assume something like the 120mm macro was used. The cam alone is forty three thousand pounds....
