today will be a moonless night...

...problem is light pollution here is everywhere! I live in Portsmouth, I am not sure where I can go...the best closest spot seems to be near to shaftesbury, already one hour away :shake:

any advice? I am not even sure what I can find there if I just go.

the problem is the hazy skies we have. I have been in US and the milky way is so clear in the NPs. I've never seen it like that even in the most remote part of Brecons. I hope you find a suitable night for it though

What is it you're hoping to shoot - big difference between locations where you can shoot startrails vs milky way.

For real dark sky there's locations around the New Forest and along the coast in W Sussex. Around Petersfield, too, it's possible to catch the MW on camera. As our best views of the Milky Way are usually to the south, look for vantage points that have no sources of light pollution between you & France ;)

I'm in Portsmouth too. These pics were all shot within an hour of home.

1/ Eastney, near Hayling Ferry

Searching...

2/ QE Country Park near Petersfield

Only for a moment

3/ W Sussex (streetlights are switched off after midnight in some villages & small towns)

1, Milky Way

4/ Shaftesbury (not sure if this is the pic that prompted your reference to the town)

oh well yeah, I know your work well :) however I did not notice that the last one is in Shaftesbury! I just use the needless (pollution) map to look for the darkest spots.

Other spots I found are: where the intech building is located (I inspected the place today, seems pretty decent and not scary :) ) and new forest (I am getting used of new forest, I will surely try in future, if I will have the chance of a clear moonless sky)

switching off light after midnight is so stingy..but good for you ;)

Countrypark seems the best in terms of sky quality?

Hey daugirdas, you are back. Your mailbox is totally full, should clear up :)

The only time I've ever seen the Milky Way in England was when I was staying in a small village just outside Dartmouth in south Devon. The place was called Stoke Fleming and there was one street light in the whole village, although that was about 30 years ago and I'm sure things have changed in the meantime.

Nice 'shots' Andrew, which demonstrate nicely what can be achieved from under UK skies, by getting out of town.

As a keen astro-imager, I am very fortunate to live in a rural village, that has no street lighting, and enjoy relatively dark skies.

I don't use a DSLR for astro-imaging, but use dedicated Peltier Cooled CCD cameras, which allow for very long exposures with minimal noise.

Very Nice.

Still a lot of brightness in the sky - What time was this taken?
